Unit 054 Principles for implementing duty of care in health, social care or children's and young peoples settings Outcome 1 Understand how duty of care contributes to safe practice. 1) – Explain what it means to have a duty of care in your own work role. To have a duty of care is the need to show reasonable amount of caution and attention to avoid negligence and another person being harmed. It is especially important when looking after young children as they are vulnerable and have not yet developed the physical and cognitive capacity in order to look after themselves. It is the duty of the adults around them to protect them. In my work role I have a duty of care towards the children and young people who I work with, I feel this is especially important as in my work place we have two 15 year old girls with special needs and they can be very vulnerable in many ways. Although they are 15 they present themselves at a much younger age and this brings with it a significant duty of care, it takes a lot of vigilance and attention to keep these young people safe, they do not for instance foresee and cope with potential dangers. They also do not have any empathy for other people and do not understand how there actions could hurt someone else or make them upset. One of the girls is also nearly almost deaf and wear 2 hearing aids so this affects her ability to communicate and to tell the staff if somebody was hurting her. In my work place we carry out risk assessments for every possible occurrence and activity in order to avoid potential hazards and to stop the young people or staff coming to any harm, this can be through accidents or though the spreading of infections. With our young people it is very important to set clear boundaries and expectations for their behaviour and we have personal care plans (PCP's) in place to help staff to discourage and stop any
