Child protection system in Australia Child protection is designed to protect children and young people who are underage and to encourage family stability. This is a responsibility of state and territory departments in the community service sector. Most children who come to the attention of child welfare system do so because of situations like child sexual abuse, neglect, physical abused, psychological abused and whose parents cannot or are vulnerable to provide adequate care or protection. In Australia “Children who are assessed to be in need of protection can come into contact with state and territory child protection and support service through someone reporting to the department, or there is reports of suspected neglect and abuse. Reports can also be reported to police and acting agencies for child protection services” (Child protection Australia 2004-05, p.1) The department with the major responsibility for child protection and associated activists provide assistance to these children and their families, it is usually through the provision of a referral from a range of services which specify the children who are in need of protection or have a range of issues or problems around them. All states In Australia and its territories have some” level of legislation requiring the compulsory reporting to state and territory child protection and support services of harm due to child abuse or neglect. Certain groups of workers are supposed to report and in other states like the northern territory anyone who believes that a child may be abused or neglected must report this to the appropriate authorities” ( Child protection Australia 2004-05 p. 4) Despite all these things put in place, it appears that Child protection system in Australia seem failing children and young people mostly in Northern territory in the metro areas of Aboriginal people.
