Physical development
A baby is born with many reflexes, these are actions they do automatically without
thinking, some of which are:
- Swallowing and sucking reflexes, these ensure that the baby can feed and swallow milk
- Rooting reflexes mean the baby will move his head to look for a nipple or teat
- Grasping reflexes are when the baby automatically puts his fingers around the object that has touched the palm of his hand
- A Startle reflex is when babies hear a sudden or see a bright light, they will react by moving their arms outwards and clenching their fists.
- Walking and standing reflexes are when babies are held upright with their feet on a firm surface.

Communication and Intellectual Development
Babies at birth cry in order to communicate their needs and they look around and react to sounds.

Social, emotional and Behavioural Development
Babies usually develop a very strong bond with their mothers from early on. You may see that at times a baby stares at their mother.

2 Months
Physical Development
- Raises head and chest when lying on stomach
- Supports upper body with arms when lying on stomach
- Stretches legs out and kicks when lying on stomach or back
- Makes smoother movements with arms and legs
- Pushes down on legs when feet are placed on a firm surface
- Sucking and grasping reflexes develop

Communication and Intellectual Development
- Coos, and makes gurgling sounds
- Turns head towards sounds

Social, Emotional and Behavioural Development
- Begins to develop a social smile
- Tries to look at parent
- Can briefly calm himself (may bring hands to mouth and suck on hand)

Cognitive (Learning, Thinking and Problem-Solving)
- Pays attention to faces
- Begins to follow things with eyes and recognize people at a distance
- Begins to act bored if activity doesn't change (cries or fussy)
