The definition of a child beauty pageant is a beauty contest featuring contestants including and younger than 18 years of age. Divisions include talent, interview, sportswear, casual wear, swim wear, western wear, theme wear, outfit of choice, decade wear, and evening wear, typically wearing makeup as well as elaborate hairstyles. The contestants wear custom fitted and designed outfits to present their routines on stage. Good Morning Class, Chloe and I will be speaking about the issue in some parts of America of Child Beauty Pageants. We think they are morally wrong in a number of ways; we feel child beauty pageants have negative effects on how young girls can interpret a woman’s behaviour and roll in society, and can make for warped views on social behaviour in a child’s mind. We also think the girls in child beauty pageants are prematurely sexualized and can develop behavioural problems in a number of ways in their futures. When we’re growing up our parents are always trying to protect us or teach us for the better in some way or another; when we want something, we are taught to earn it rather than just getting it. We are told off when we fight or express our anger and frustration in the form of a tantrum. We are taught that praise and rewards are given to those who earn them, and work for it. We are surrounded by people who love us because it makes us feel like we matter, like we’re worth something. It makes us feel like we’re special. Yet child beauty pageants break all of these teachings. It’s in the name! A beauty pageant for kids? Whoever wins is the prettiest? It doesn’t matter how intelligent you are, how special an individual you are, all that matters is looks, and that is what these children are being taught.
