The Golden Age of the Motown Sound By Vivian M. Baulch / The Detroit News March 1, 2000 That man, of course, was Berry Gordy Jr. Smokey Robinson saw something in Gordy, too, and urged him to start his own recording company. In 1959, Gordy borrowed $800 from his family and "Motown" was born. "It is probably true to say that Motown was as much Robinson's company as it was Gordy's, although Gordy was unquestionably the head of the company," author Sharon Davis wrote in her book, 'Motown, the History.' By 1972 Berry Gordy was the richest black man in America with an annual income in excess of $10 million. Berry Gordy Jr.: The genius behind Motown.
The name “Negro Wall Street,” also known as “Black Wall Street,” was coined during the early 1900’s and was given to Greenwood Avenue in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Due to segregation, blacks were only allowed to shop, spend, and live in a 35 square block area called the Greenwood district. Tulsa, Oklahoma began as an outpost of the Creek Indians. This area grew rapidly into home for several prominent black businessmen with the sudden oil discovery. Greenwood housed a variety of thriving businesses that were very successful up until the Tulsa Race Riot.
Washington delivered one of the most famous civil right speeches, the Atlanta Compromise Address, which is about urging African-Americans to get economic security before social or political equality. This speech caused arguments between Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois but, many people agreed with him and fought for economic security first. Another subject he spoke about was the National Negro Business League, which was formed 1915. The organization was formed to promote financial and commercial welfare of blacks.
There were many other civil right groups such as SNCC, who helped organise The Sit-ins of 1960; NAACP, who also aided The Montgomery Bus Boycott; and The Black Panthers, a more Militant group whose main cause was to empower Black people. It is my opinion that whilst Martin Luther King played a significant part in the black civil rights campaign, the other Civil Rights groups should not be ignored for the part they played. Martin Luther King was a key figurehead in the advancement of black Americans. He was known around the World for taking part in several Civil Rights campaigns. He was a highly intelligent man, coming from a higher-class background.
“The Long, Bitter Trail” By Anthony F.C. Wallace “The Long, Bitter Trail” in my opinion, was a very good book that taught me a lot I didn’t know until I read the book. The book is about how Andrew Wallace’s investigation of one influential decision involving the five civilized tribes of the Native American’s living in Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and Tennessee for years after the construction of the American Republic. Also the efforts Andrew Jackson, who was an Indian fighter and land grabber for a long time, while being president in 1830 signed the act allowing the eviction of the Cherokees, Choctaws, Creeks, Chickasaws, and Seminoles. Wallace begins the book by describing who the people were who benefited from the diffusion of agricultural practices way before Columbus.
