Title: Observing Bright Line Spectra

Procedure:
  1. to measure the wavelengths of the most intense bright line spectra given off by some elements on the periodic table
  2. determine the identity of an unknown element by measuring the wavelengths of bright line spectra given off by this element and comparing it to known bright line spectra
  3. Use a diffraction grating to see what color of light is produced by a certain atom

Conclusion: In this lab we had learned how to measure the wavelengths of the most intense bright line spectra given off by some elements on the periodic table and determine the identity of an unknown element by measuring the wavelengths of bright line spectra given off by this element and comparing it to known bright line spectra. Spectral lines are lines in a spectrum due to the absorption or emission of light at a discrete frequency and they are produced when light hits an atom it "excites" some of the electrons and causes them to jump to a higher energy level or orbital. They then fall back down to their ground state and release a quantum of energy in the form of light. This light is seen as color on the visible light spectrum. The colors shown correspond directly to the wavelength. As you go from 700 nanometers to 400 nanometers energy increases and the color goes from red until violet all the way at the other end of the visible light spectrum.
