Abstract This essay is an overview on the Charismatic or transformational leadership. Today's leaders face an extremely vibrant business environment where the inevitable part is change. To successfully deal with change, his followers must contribute to the leader’s vision and should be ready to commit to achieving his direction. Leadership in an Organization focuses on the scope and influence on the managerial leadership at large. Over the last decade or more, this topic of charismatic and transformational leadership has seen the light of research to get deeper insight both on the development of the theory and empirical investigations. There are several dominant theories which are now being recognized as paradigms in the field of leadership and its study. It is also important because the leadership of the organization acts as the key factor or reason for people staying with an organization or why people leave. It is said that people do not quit organizations; they quit leaders. The most common reason for people leaving an organization is its poor quality of leadership. Transformational leadership. In the recent years Transformational leadership, has become very popular. This concept was initiated by Bernard M. Bass (1985a) and James MacGregor Burns (1978). Transformational Leadership – the major characteristics are: - Change agent. - Inspire change and innovation. Transformational leaders are considered to have heightened motivation. This is inflected from four factors, (a) charismatic leadership; (b) intellectual stimulation; (c) inspirational leadership; and (d) individualized consideration (Bass, 1985a). Charisma arises devotion in the people towards the leader and his mission.
