Actually, Arabs are also known to follow Christian, Judaism or Druze religions. (Arabs Religion, n.d.) One U.S. policy that has recently been changed, since the attacks on America, is racial profiling. This tactic if often used in American airports to overt further attacks on American soil. The check-in process at American airports is a stringent procedure that many Americans and visitors are subjected to experience because he or she may resemble the Arab or Middle Eastern race. There have been laws put into place to prevent racial profiling based on an individuals religion or religious appearance in four states, Alaska, California, Massachusetts and Arkansas.
The devastating tragedy of 9/11 left all of America mourning. The horrific event opened the eyes of Americans, the fact that America was not invincible shocked many. The realization that the country was not undefeatable led to drastic changes. Post 9/11 security was increased, racial profiling became common, and foreigners were misjudged. The threat of terrorist attacks changed American culture immensely; the devastation wakened the need for protection and a sense of security.
Arab culture often embraces Islam and they make use of the Arabic language. Arabs have various views regarding terrorism as a way to express their sovereignty. Arab Americans have contributed in the fields of labor, health, social justice, law, cultural awareness and community development by putting their own interest aside and working for the betterment of all. The terrorist attacks of September 11th not only brought Arabs to public attention, but also put them at risk and in danger of discrimination and prejudice. Still to this day discrimination is present throughout the U.S. many Arabs dress differently than do other Americans; their cuisine is drastically different and their traditions are different.
But, just because a few Muslim extremists committed a heinous crime the name Muslim has been forever tainted. Polls have shown that 93% of Muslims don’t support extremist views on terrorism and a rising number of Muslims have been actively speaking out against terrorism – something our media fails to mention. It is a religion that is growing in popularity. There are Muslim communities in Europe and the United States. There are also Muslim communities in China. Arabs come from the country of Saudi Arabia while the majority is Muslim, it is possible to be a citizen of Saudi Arabia and not be Muslim, just as it is possible to be a citizen of the United States and not be Christian. Due to the violence and extremism of a few members of Islam, people of Middle Eastern origins or members of Islam have been subjected to increased hostility in the United States.
When artists portray images revolving around religious icons the image may turn into something highly controversial. It is true that the constitution does give Americans freedom of speech as well as expression but there is always a fine line between pushing the envelope and burning it and sometimes these artists burn it completely. The artist who constructed the image for the Blake Prize for religious art constructed an image of the portrait of Jesus with the face of Osama Bin Laden. The image’s controversy is one that deserves analyzing because of the context of the image as well as the reaction to the image. Throughout the analysis one must keep in mind that this image was meant for a contest of religious art.
Such areas included: Egypt, North Africa, Armenia, etc. While many had tried to face the Islamic forces, they often fell to them in their bloody conquest to establish dominance. However, not all converts were forced into accepting the Islamic faith by ways of violence. Some people were converted through voluntary association because the religion and traditions appealed to them. On the other hand, others were forced to accept the faith through induced pressures.
But, it is also believed that even though the different ethnic groups are fighting against each other, they show a common hatred for our country. The terrorist groups have been accused and declared as taking these unfriendly attacks because of the religious and ethnic diversity around the country. But, when they see that Americans, people of different race and from another country, try to interfere with their own lives, they do not like that. There were several instances where representatives from different “religious groups” would meet under the supervision of American troops and a suicide bomber would set a trap and take them all out. Even though these people are trying to resolve their differences, it seems as if the terrorists don’t see this and just look as it as that people who are not supposed to be here are interfering with our business.
Muslims are still facing old crisis such as poverty and illiteracy among its followers while these new challenges such as religious radicalism that is added into the other two ancient challenges are troublesome for Muslims society to deal with.
