George also did everything he could to kill Lennie in the most humane way possible. Lastly George knew couldn’t just run with Lennie like they did after Weed. But by no means was this an easy choice you can tell that George was troubled when asked how he killed Lennie…“ ‘I just done it,’ George said tiredly” (Steinbeck p.107). The first and most prominent reason that George shot Lennie him self was the fact that George would not have been able to live with himself if he had not done it. The thing that you have to understand about Lennie is that he has a mental disability.

After witnessing the heart wrenching death Paul states “I become faint, all at once I cannot do any more. I won’t revile any more, it is senseless, I could drop down and never rise up again” (32). Paul soon goes on to witness many more deaths causing sadness and annihilation to become a big part of his life. Soldiers get so use to seeing others die they become oblivious to the fact that each individual’s life is to be held sacred and that they only get one. In the book Paul feels that they have no reason to be fighting and that they have been abated to beasts just trying to protect themselves from others who are doing the same.

In a psychological fight against the adults, Ender once again lost due to a major lack of understanding. Although Ender understood that the adults would not be nice to him, Ender did not know that he is unknowingly killing billions of buggers for the adults already. Ender, who did not want to fight the buggers, yet, is fighting them unknowingly, like a puppet for the adults. In this case, the adults were able to manipulate Ender, something Ender did not like. In fact, Ender thought that he has defeated the adults by defeating the bugger fleet on the simulator, when in reality it is the adults who won with their deception.
It was one of the most heart breaking decisions I ever had to make but I could see the pain that old dog was going through and I couldn’t stand to see him hurting anymore. Carlson promised me he would try his best not make it painful for Scruffy but I was too upset to say anything. He led him out of the bunkhouse and I just had to lie down. It tore me apart having to see him leave and know that was the last time I would ever see him. The guys tried to distract me from the situation but it was all I could think about.
His life began on that stormy day when he was created but was left to survive on its own. Through the struggle of escaping the apartment, the creature is faced with the discovery of light, darkness, hunger, thirst, cold and being turned away by the same being that created him. While wondering alone he comes upon the warmth of a fire but becomes arose when it burns him. Though he felt warmth he also felt hunger and in search of food he finds a hut which he enters but is feared by the owner. He continues into a village but there too he is feared instead of being helped, and in the end he stayed away from humans.
People would creep in at night on Eli’s father and hit him to be able to steal the little food he had. I will never forget the image of the sick father getting beat for his food because that was his food and nobody had the right to steal it. He was sick and the little food he had he needed. I felt pain when I read of this part in the book. The pain the father must have been in trying to fight for his food and then getting it taken from him and having to feel hunger and sick.
Finally, Alexie uses words such as starve and noose. The way he uses starve is in a metaphorical scene: he was starving and hungering for a better life than what he had, an escape plan from the discrimination, and judging that outsiders were constantly doing. When he uses the word noose, he’s saying that everything looks like a noose if you stare at it long enough, meaning that many of the Indian boys would have sooner killed themselves than deal with everything they had to. But like I said earlier, Levi was more ashamed over the fact that he was too focused on survival and realized that they lost his humanity along the way. I think Levi was being too hard on himself. Throughout the rest of the book, his humanity is present through his exchange with other prisoners, his ever-present knowledge, and his insight into others. Although this passage is glaringly honest, I do not think that he completely lost his humanity due to his will to survive. Levi admits that there were times when thought was impossible to ignore, like right before falling asleep.
