Yet I believe that this book, “The Chocolate War” by Robert Cormier, should be kept in schools to be read by teenagers. Many people believe that this book should be banned for the fact that it talks about bullying and violence. In a couple parts of the story, Jerry is beaten up. There are also multiple parts where the Vigils or Janza bully a kid. But that isn’t so bad that we should ban it.
Notes for “Whose Lathe?” by Ursula K. Le Guin Thesis 1: School boards should not have the power to ban books based on personal beliefs and comfort level. Thesis 2: While choosing books for students is important for their education, giving them the freedom to make their own choices, even in such small instances, surpasses that importance. Thesis 3: The concept of free choice is far more humane than that of censorship. Final Thesis: Censorship placed upon school books rids students of their choice in reading thus school boards should not have the audacity to ban books solely because they do not accord with their personal opinions and levels of comfort. Proof: * “In discussion, teachers pointed out that since it is the policy of the Washougal School District to assign an alternative book to any student who objects on any grounds to reading an assigned one, the attempt to prevent a whole class from reading a book was an attempt to change policy, replacing free choice by censorship” – pg, 257, 1st paragraph * “Censorship, here or in Russia or wherever, is absolutely anti-democratic and elitist.
The derogatory term makes it hard to appropriately depict the true meaning of the book to a group of children without raising countless unspoken questions. On the other hand, we have those that believe that the removal of Twain’s vernacular of that time takes away from the contextual essence of the novel leaving the youth “unaware that their people have overcome centuries of oppression”. (Schneider 3) Furthermore, censorship of Huckleberry Finn could depend on many other factors: fear of uneducated or insensitive teachers leading student discussions, school administrators who wish to avoid controversy and discomfort with acknowledging our country's painful history. “It’s true that people might now be offended by the portrayal of Jim, or the use of “nigger”, but times have changed and we don’t portray them that way anymore. You can’t just ignore what happened and people
The book Fahrenheit 451 is a book about censorship that bans book from the world. Anyone that has books gets burned down by the firemen. The government controls everything in the society and clearly it does not work. Therefore you can tell that if you censor books and do not allow people to read and gain knowledge a scenario like Fahrenheit 451 could happen faster then we
Usually to keep children from certain ideas and/or information. (About Banned and Challenged Books.) You might be wondering, “What are banned and challenged books?” Well, challenged books are books with attempts to be removed or restricted. Like if a parent tried to ban a book but the request did not get followed up or backed up. The parent might have thought the book was bad but others did not so it just stayed at challenged.
The first and obvious reason is that the book takes place in a pro-communist setting. The book may have been trying to prove a point, but it was still enough to offend many. The book is also sexually explicit, so it is easy to see why parents may want to “protect” their children from the idea of sex and that it should not be thought of in the way George Orwell writes about it. The most interesting reason for the ban of 1984 was the fact that it reminded people of what is like in the United States today. It has made people uncomfortable to think that what is being described in this chilling novel reminds them of what they see outside their own windows, with the fact that humans are constantly on watch and there is practically no way to keep anything hidden.
Censorship is the idea of not revealing ideas and text in order to benefit society. But in many ways, censoring items causes the world to create biased thoughts based on the limited information released. In some cases the world is blinded because they are told nothing to begin with. Historical events such as the holocaust can prove this true. To this day society continues to be censored from ideas by the government and companies that impact our ways of life and learning.
Schools cannot beat the entertainment industry at its own game. What they have to offer students is the chance for intellectual freedom, the power to think for themselves…(Ravitch 163). In school, students are always taught to have an open-mind, how can they have an open-mind when they are being censored? Schools only offer boring, bland topics and cause students to lose interest. Students are so highly influenced by the media that if they aren’t hearing about violence, death, sex or lies, then they have the “don’t care” mentality.
I highly doubt cigarette ads have anything to do with this act, as he only reads children’s books: instead, he is simply mimicking the actions of my relatives who smoke. Of course, my parents chastise his actions and he then understands the act is wrong, for him at least. With this example in mind, maybe what the government needs to do is concentrate more on education and awareness of the dangers of smoking tobacco. Glasser himself states education, not censorship, is the true way to handle the tobacco
This book is actually banned from some schools in the United States. In finish if I had the choice of not reading it I wouldn’t, 1) it is inappropriate, rude disrespectful. 2) A flaw about me is if it doesn’t really interest me or it doesn’t affect me I don’t care to read or learn because after this I will forget about and never pay attention to it again. One day it might change but this boo had no affect on me nor did it change my perspective on first nation’s
