1. Would you answer honestly if participating in a national crime survey asking about your criminal behavior, including any drinking and drug use? Why or why not? If I was to participate in a national crime survey asking about my criminal behavior, including any drinking and drug use, I would absolutely be honest because I have no reason to lie and nothing to hide. I don’t drink or smoke so taking this survey for me would be like taking a walk in a park. Some people may lie to protect themselves because they know they engage in these activities all the time and are afraid of being set up. These individuals may feel like if they tell the truth it may be a written confession, so they answer the questions in a way that is socially necessary and accepted, but not truthful. 2. Explain how honesty and dishonesty impact self-report studies. Being completely honest in these self-reports may help different groups of people understand criminal behaviors and crimes. These reports are gathered information that is put into data. National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) is an incident-based reporting system for crimes known to the police. For each crime incident coming to the attention of law enforcement, a variety of data are collected about the incident. These data include the nature and types of specific offenses in the incident, characteristics of the victim and offender (NACJD, 2013). The National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS), this is when law enforcement agencies collect detailed incident level data regarding individuals offenses and arrest, then submit them using prescribed data elements and data values(FBI, 2013). Uniform Crime Report (UCR), this program provides a nationwide view of crime based on the submission of crime information by law enforcement agencies throughout the country (FBI, 2013).
