THE CAUSES AND EFFECTS OF GLOBAL WARMING Global Warming is a process whereby gases created through human industrial and agricultural practices (primarily Carbon IV Oxide from burning fossil fuels and wood, as well as methane, nitrous oxide and chlorofluorocarbon) increase the heat-reflecting potential of the atmosphere, thereby raising the planet’s average temperature. The modern and civilized human ways of living plays a major role in the cause of Global Warming. One of the many causes of Global Warming is increase in the use of chemical fertilizers. The use of chemical fertilizers has risen through the years. The high rate of nitrogen-rich fertilizers application has affected the heat storage of cropland and the run-off of excess fertilizers creates ‘dead-zones’; which is an area of the ocean that is being cut-off of oxygen frequently due to pollution. The effect of high use of fertilizers may lead to loss in soil nutrients, which will make growing food difficult thus causing hunger and draught reason being because of lack of soil nutrients and change in climate. “Climate change is expected to have the most severe impact on water supplies. “Shortages in future are likely to threaten food production, reduce sanitation, and hinder economic development and damage ecosystems. It causes more violent swings between floods and droughts””. As written by John Vidal an environmental editor for Guardian Newspaper on 29th May, 2009 Deforestation. The accelerating destruction of rainforests that form a precious cooling band around the earth’s equator is now being recognized as one of the main causes of climate change. The use of trees for fuel is one cause of deforestation. Our affinity for wood and paper products, our consumption of livestock grazed on former forestland, and the use of tropical forestland for commodities adds to the wide deforestation of our rainforest.
