What would you include in a brief summary on the history of the environmental movement? Environmentalist can trace the history of environmental issue back to ancient times where air and water pollution as well as soil conservation were concerns for the ancestors of modern civilization. Places like ancient Rome was infamous for streets filled with sewage. During the Middle Ages, a plague in Europe as well as the use of coal for heating in England warranted concern with public health. As centuries came and went health problems increased.
| Throughout our nation’s history, great disasters have prompted major changes in society—turning points with an undeniable impact on American civilization. In the case of the infamous 1911 New York City fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, it took the tragic loss of 146 lives to help put fundamental workplace health and safety considerations on the national agenda. The Triangle Factory Fire’s loss of life was fueled by non-existent fire prevention measures, inadequate safety codes, lack of proper firefighting equipment, poorly planned fire escapes, and inaccessible exits. The aftermath of the fire would be the catalyst for three key changes to our industrialized nation: improved fire codes, healthier working conditions for labor workers, and increased factory safety standards. The Triangle Shirtwaist Company made shirtwaist style ladies’ blouses, popularized in an expanding retail market for ‘ready to wear’ clothing.
Modernity may cease with global warming as half the biggest companies are oil companies, and oil is the essence of life. Deforestation and the effects of global warming on our forests and trees are far-reaching and quite evident. All our planets physical features are changing rapidly. And McKibben repeats himself on purpose to get his point across: the planet we knew is no more, we live on a new, more complex and harsher
2013).Pharmaceutical companies sometimes place active chemicals and waste into groundwater sources, in which almost all of the groundwater may be untreated which most likely cause contamination. (Herber, 2002). Abstract: Increase in the emissions of carbon dioxide by burning fossil fuels is the largest cause of environmental down grading resulting not only in global warming but also causing acid rain which alters the pH balance of ground water. Water is a universal solvent; however, its dissolving properties are very sensitive to changes in temperature and pH. Global economic growth has, unfortunately,
They grow by piling up lava and ash into cones with steep-sided slopes, which are prone to collapse as massive landslides known as debris avalanches. The 1980 debris avalanche at Mount St. Helens literally opened a new chapter in the study of volcanic hazards. Debris avalanches were an under-appreciated hazard prior to 1980. More than 200 prehistoric debris avalanche deposits around the world were recognized because of observations of processes and resulting geologic features at Mount St. Helens. For example, the origin of puzzling, hilly volcanic deposits near Mount Shasta and Mount Rainier became clear.
Jeffrey Owens April 19, 2011 Geography, 100 Removing the Purple Mountain Majesties The use of Coal in America has become second nature to United States citizens, and American corporations. Coal is used for energy across the U.S., and is very important to the economy and the structure of our nation. Using coal for electricity has become as American as hot dogs and automobiles and while coal is very necessary and useful, some as destructive and controversial views some of the means by which the coal is recovered. Mountaintop removal has is one of these means of obtaining coal, and has sparked interest and outrage across America. Although the benefits of coal are numerous and extensive, Mountaintop removal is detrimental to the environment
The economic growth has put too much stress on the nature. There are many types of environmental damage, and Mckibben examines climate change in the chapter. He points out that climate change is not some future specter and it’s already emerging as the biggest problem the world faces. He also insists that the richer people get, the dirtier the air is, and this is indeed one of the environmental destruction that he described in the chapter. Another destruction that he talks about is the global warming.
The Globe is losing its Cool Global Warming Melissa Moran University of Phoenix Axia collage Professors name SCI 275 October 21, 2009 There are many reasons for the change in the climate. Climate change also known as global warming is the change in the average temperature of the earth surface, and the change in wind and precipitation. Global warming is caused by releasing fossil fuels into the atmosphere. Many factors such as human activity and greenhouse gas emissions contribute to global warming. Global warming also has natural causes though they are often down-played in the media.
Therefore it became known as “the Perfect Plague”. This was because there was no medical knowledge of the sort during this time period. It is then proven that the one reason the plague was so devastating was because “medieval medicine had no answers to what it was caused by or how to fight the deadly disease“ (Rosenhek, 4). To see how deadly this disease truly was, Dr. Christopher Duncan and Dr. Susan Scott from the University of Liverpool provided scientific information to give us insight on the harmfulness of the sickness. Both scientists state that the epidemic “spread throughout the continent far faster than any modern plague” and that the plague was in fact “a viral hemorrhagic fever, similar to Ebola.” (A.W, 3).
There is always some kind of flaw or side effect that comes with the benefit. For example, take the discovery of fossil fuels such as coal. A benefit that it gave was that it spurred on the industrial revolution which made many of the things that we now use today but its discovery also sped up the pollution of the atmosphere and the destruction of the ozone layer. The discovery of coal as a fossil fuel may have advanced human’s lives, but it had a drawback on the environment. Another such example is medicine.
