When George, Sam, and Rameck were in University High, they didn’t have teachers that were motivated. “We had a few dedicated teachers at the high school who pushed us to learn and forced us to do our work, but too many others just didn’t know how to reach us and didn’t seem to care” (59). The teachers don’t have the desire to help students or care, therefore, Sam, Rameck, and George's grades drop. This proved how important of a role teachers play on a student's academic life. If the teachers didn’t care about their education, how would you expect students to stay in school when the teachers don’t care whether they attend or not.
Anything in life should not be given to anyone it should be earned or suffer the consequence. The fear of failing for some students is scary, he or she does not want to fail and if there motivated the student would most likely try harder and pay more attention in school. In example, when I was in high school I would never concentrate on social studies thinking it was important to me and one day my teacher came up to me telling me I would fail and not graduate this year because of my lack of effort in his class. From there on it got me thinking of my future and I didn’t want to fail and be back in high school for another year for stupid mistakes I made, so the next semester I work harder then ever and passed the class with an A. When a student is not trying to do well in a subject, or in school altogether, there is nothing anyone around them can do to change that; it must be the student’s desire and decision to turn things around, and do the best they can. There are some cases when teachers willing allow a student to fail a class. The teacher chooses not to follow-up with the student, to ensure they understand the material and attain the grades necessary to pass the class. The majority of the students who are falling behind will not even talk to the teacher about their problem. This can be a result of laziness or even shame.
These families do not work a typical 9-5, this does not mean that they are not involved with their children’s school. They do what they can, when they can. Some people deserve a second chance, but it shouldn’t be given to someone that doesn’t show effort towards school. If someone is failing a class you can’t always blame the student. You have to put in perspective that the teacher could be bad at teaching,or perhaps the student missed a lot of class due to being sick,or maybe the class is just too hard. So however, handing out extra credit could be tolerable to the students that show effort, and not to the students who mess around in class. One reason a student should receive extra credit to pass, is that they have trouble with that one specific subject.
Universities favor grade point averages, high standardized test scores, advanced placement courses, and any other reflection of above average education.
