The catcher in the rye I have chosen two questions to write about, in the essay. "Holden calls most people “phonies”. What do you think he means by this? Give examples." Holden uses the word "Phony" very often. The meaning for the word phony is fake, false. He uses the word phony when a person is acting like they aren't themselves. Personally I don't like that either. Holden has been in use of a word quite often, the word ‘’Phony’’ This word means that something is fake, not real. A phony is usually used when there is a false person. In Holden's case his whole surrounding was filled with those kind of so called phonies. There are some examples of phonies in the book. Mr. Spencer is a phony because he pretends to be concerned about Holden but beats him up by reading his essay. Pencey Prep is a phony because it pretends it can mold students into clear-thinking young men. The film Holden watches in New York is a phony because everyone laughs stupidly at the end when the dog has puppies. Before I read the book I had never heard of the word Phony, but I had heard of the word fake. The other question I have chosen is: “Holden says that he lies for no good reason. In light of this, does he really lie for no good reason, or is there a reasoning there?” I think he does lie for no reason, but I think that time he didn’t want to get his friend in trouble. Maybe he lied for a good cause, maybe he didn’t. Lying is not a good thing to do, it does not matter if it is for a good cause or not. It may be a bad thing for you to lie, but it may help your friend get out of trouble. What I’m
