This statement by Tenessee Williams can be applied to nearly any situation in life. In Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, it refers to the aspect of trust within a relationship between two people. Not talking about attitudes of the other which are disturbing you, not talking about past events, because you think they will have a negative effect on your future, not telling the other what you feel, because you think it will hurt him or her – these ideas are present and common in any form of friendship. Their intension is to not have a negative influence on the relationship, but in very many cases in the end they cause much more problems than they were trying to prevent. This quote can also be transferred to great parts of our society: especially people considering themselves as not interested in politics, but also conservative and social democratic thinking individuals don’t find it necessary to deal with actual problems in their country or in the world. They don’t believe that they themselves, as the “small people” can change anything; they think that “the guys up there” sooner or later are going to fix everything. Sadly, this way of thinking doesn’t come true in reality, and as long as nobody analyses the problems by their roots, and as long as nobody stands up against the causes of these problems, they will just get worse.
