“Cork” Walgreen III. In the 1970s, Walgreens’ rival Eckerd Corporation looked as though it was going to be the big winner in the drug store industry, only to be overtaken by Walgreens (Hattwick, 2005). The difference in the two companies’ success is the difference in their leaders: Jack Eckerd was a dynamo of energy who “had an uncanny genius for figuring out 'what' to do but little ability to assemble the right 'who' on the executive team” (Hattwick, 2005). This brought Jay a great deal of success and he became a self-made millionaire, eventually growing to be the wealthiest man on West Egg. Charles Baker said “Gatsby is our model for success because he appeals to our remarkable ability to adjust our personal code of ethics in order to get what we think we somehow deserve” (47).
Why Not Eighteen? Why is it legal for an eighteen-year-old to be able to sacrifice their life for their country, to get married, and to vote, but illegal for them to drink? The controversy and arguments for lowering the drinking age have been debated for years. Beginning with the early 1900s, the eighteenth amendment was ratified and had outlawed the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcoholic beverages in the United States following the Prohibition Movement. However, this amendment was ineffective in its enforcement and people continued to smuggle and consume alcohol as freely as they wanted.
Prohibition Gangsters such as Bugsy Siegel and Al Capone became national icons for their roles during prohibition. The transportation, manufacture, and sale of alcohol were banned with the enactment of the 18th amendment in January 1920. The reasons to ban alcohol were simple and strait forward. The United States wanted to eliminate the negative affects of alcohol that came from consuming it. The anti-saloon league warned people against alcohol consumption and how it destroyed families.
