Case Study -2 Madonna. Is Madonna Talented? To answer this we need to analyze Madonna as an individual and as a strategist. Did she possess natural talent, as a vocalist, musician, dancer songwriter or actress, No when we consider these factors, her talents were modest. However, she possessed a relentless drive for stardom. Her activities be it records, concerts, music videos, movies, books and charity events –belies a remarkable dedication to a single goal “to be a star” As Jeff Katzenberg of Dream works observed “She has always had a vision of exactly who she is, whether performer or businesswoman, and she has been strong enough to balance it all. Every time she comes up with a new look it is successful. When it happens once, OK it might be luck, but twice is a coincidence, and three times it got to be Remarkable Talent” And Madonna’s on her fifth or sixth time. The above statement sums it all she was extremely talented in strategic Management. Her goals were simple and consistent, she had great understanding of her working environment, she was very effective in using her resources and she was great in implementing them. Why has she been so successful for such a long period? To understand this, we need to understand the common elements of a successful strategy. 1) Goals that are simple, consistent and long term. 2) Profound understanding of the competitive environment. 3) Objective appraisal of resources. 4) Effective implementation. As we know certainly not outstanding talent as a vocalist, musician made Madonna a diva, Icon, but the factors mentioned above which she followed with dedication got her to where she is today. Madonna’s career featured a relentless drive for stardom in which other dimensions of her life were either subordinated to or absorbed within her career goals.
