Case study 1 : Beijing, here we come ! p.165 1) The likelihood that Canadian people will be able to reach an agreement with the mainland Chinese is doubtful. In fact, if Canadian wants to obtain a contract with the mainland Chinese they will need to be patient because the People’s China Republic (PCR) like to take their time to make a business decision. Indeed, it’s taking 90 days of receipt for a 5 yeas agreement, and also the contract with the Tawainese firm will terminate in 90 days. But, maybe the Canadian can wait longer for the Chinese answer, terminate the Tawainese’s contract and see if the chinese answer is positive or negative. I think it will be better for Canadian to wait the Chinese answer instead of extended their agreement with the Tawainese firm because the Chinese have a better position. 2) The Canadians should insist on getting more actively involved in the production process because they have to make sure that the management and the quality of the production line will be the same than in Taiwan. They don’t want to change their quality or change the way of the actual production, they just want to pay less labor for the same production, like this they can pretend to earn more money. Moreover, it’s not a safe decision to let to the Chinese free hand in manufacturing their goods because if they screw up in production, the Canadians don’t have any insurance to pay for this mistake. So the Canadians will probably lose more money by making this decision. 3) Canadians should want to know everything about the Chinese culture, and catch all the differences between their own culture. This is an important factor for them if they want to make deals with the mainland Chinese.
