Case Study 3: Personal Navigation Devices Why have Personal Navigation Devices become popular? What technologies are required to facilitate the success of PNDs? Personal Navigation Devices have become the must have gadget. They offer more comfort in our busy lives in the in a sense that PNDs give you the ability to concentrate less on directions. GPS enabled devices like Smartphones have been winning over customers from weekend hikers, bikers, and people who have a lousy sense of direction. Most smartphones have GPS navigation applications that feature an interactive street map that usually shows route information as well as an option to show step-by-step information. Therefore, this is why PNDs have become so popular. Who are some of the leaders in PNDs? What are the likely factors that will contribute to winning in this marketplace? There are many companies that develop PNDs, but the most famous of these companies are TomTom, Garmin, and Magellan. The most important factors for the competitors that will contribute to the marketplace are the ability to build a device that will be multifunctional and portable but not costly. Also, the PND’s features which would satisfy different customers depending on their particular interests and needs. What will be a likely future for PNDs? I think that dedicated PNDs will continue to be preferred for the use in the car. However, in-car navigation systems will be complemented by smartphone navigation applications. Tablets may also gain some GPS functionality. GPS enabled Smartphones may even replace in-car navigation systems. Apply as many TCOs to Personal Navigation Devices as possible.
