1. Do these results surprise you? Why or why not? Answer: These numbers do surprise me a bit. I believed that some countries would have an higher average of hours worked per week. Countries such as Germany, United States and Japan. I do not believe that dividing the overall work hours by 52 weeks do the more developed nations justice since vacations is a vital part in these societies calendar year. Therefore I believe that in order to do all the countries more justice in this research they would have to divide their individual work hours with their individual work weeks over a year. From my knowledge there is a huge competition in workplace in South Korea and the reason why countries like Greece, Italy and Iceland are located so far up on this list with numbers around 35 hours per week and above is that before these countries started to get financial problems in the beginning of 2008 people were working very intensively during a short period of time with early retirements. Overall I am kind of skeptical towards this research and the numbers that occur in it. But to answer the question stated; After consideration of the circumstances around the research, no I am not surprised about the results in this research. 2. Why do you think U.S. employees have a reputation for “living to work”? Answer: USA is one of the developed countries in the world. It is well known that U.S is the land of opportunity. If anyone has a desire to do something he/she can do it very easily. Another most important thing is their culture. They are individualist, power distance is lower, and have a high intensity to take risk and long term goal oriented. Opportunity gives them advantage to achieve their personal goal.
