What were some of Apple’s biggest successes and failures? Describe why. Apple Inc. has become a visionary company and over the last five years, from 2008 until 2012, Apple’s market capitalization has increased $422 billion compared with Google’s increase of $13 billion (Kalb, 2012). Starting from humble beginnings in his family garage, Steve Jobs and a friend created one of the world’s most valuable fortune 500 companies. There were many successes and the company experienced its share of failures. What follows is a list of Apples biggest successes and failures. Apple’s Successes: Apple had a string of successes starting with the iPod and has developed a great reputation that has excited their fan base each time a new product is introduce. The products, even though mass produced, use only the highest quality materials and industrial design with the finishing details only found in finely crafted products. The popularity of the iPod, according to the Nielson NetRating, has helped to drive more traffic to Apple’s iTunes site, and between December 2004 and December of 2005 the number of people going to the iTunes site grew from 6.1 million to 20.7 million. The company also said that is more than 14% of the net’s population that is using iTunes (Kalb, 2012). Apple’s Failures: Apples Lisa (1983 – 1985): This was one of the first PC’s to use graphical interfacing, but unfortunately the Lisa was slow and extremely expensive. Priced at around $10,000 the machine became too expensive for the average computer enthusiast to own (Gruman, 2009). Although in 1986 Steve Jobs was able to improve the pc and lower the price most consumers were no longer interested in the computer and owners were allowed to trade them and buy the then popular and faster $4100 Mac Plus for $1,500.
