Date: 14/12/07 Name: Philip-Jon Allard Assignment: Describe loading and discharging operations including information about safety, checks done during and after, ballasting operations and paperwork. Cargo Operations As a ship safely berths at a loading or discharging port, preparations must now be made to facilitate for loading or discharging as the case may be. Safety Gear is brought on deck, namely portable foam fire extinguishers, eye wash, a fire plan and the international shore connection. Also notices are put up on the side of the gangway, visible to all entering the vessel. These notices inform those entering the vessel that there should be no use of cigarettes/naked lights, mobile phones and that there shall be no unauthorised persons onboard. Foam monitors aft and forward are pointed towards the manifold at side of loading/discharging whether it being port or starboard, together with removable monitors connected to fire hoses. Before any loading or discharging of cargo takes place, certain safety checks must be completed. These checks consist of: 1) Level gauges being in working order and aligned to the ullage port. 2) All remote temperature readings referenced. 3) High level and Overfill level alarms tested. 4) Pressure Vacuum valves been manually functioned. 5) Pressure Indicators in loading lines in working order. 6) Oil/water interface detector in good order. 7) Portable temperature probe in working order. 8) All tank, line or sluice valves in cargo system shut. 9) Correct isolation assigned to blanks and valves for adequate grade segregation. 10) Ship/shore connection correctly secured and insulation adequate. 11) Number of pumps/purge air requirements agreed with the duty engineer. 12) Cargo/ballast operation plan sufficiently detailed and officers fully briefed. 13) Ballast control system fully operational. 14) All
