Running head: CAREERS IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE: LAW ENFORCEMENT Criminal Justice: Law Enforcement Careers New York State Police Farrah Willis Westwood College CAREERS IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE: LAW ENFORCEMENT Abstract There are many positions to hold in law enforcement, today I chose to write about State Police or State Trooper. In this field of law enforcement Troopers encounter many different situations where there help is needed and do so with honor and respect. A State Troopers routine can change on a moment’s notice. Their duties include, but are not limited to, ticketing speeding motorists, specialty jobs which include those of K-9 handler, scuba diver, or a member of the Mobile Response Team (similar to a SWAT team), bomb disposal unit, and to protect visiting officials and their respective governors. State Troopers willingly put themselves at risk for injury and or death to protect the public from harm. CAREERS IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE: LAW ENFORCEMENT New York State Police have many job duties that range from writing tickets to speeding motorists to protecting their governors and other visiting officials. They are not bound by the limits of the city but have the entire state as their jurisdiction. State police do not enforce local ordinances as a rule but will, when needed, assist in local investigations. While there are many police agencies that require only a high school diploma there are also many that require at least an associate’s degree or college credit equivalent. There are even some metropolitan areas that require a bachelor’s degree. In New York State one must have completed high school or New York State High School Equivalency Diploma and have at least 60 college credit hours. They will consider only 30 credit hours if after 2 years in the military with an honorable discharge or after successfully completing a Certified
