Halloween is the time of the year when everyone in the neighborhood comes together to adopt new identities, get free candy, frighten small children, and litter thier yards with styrofoam gravestones. Pumpkin carving is a great Halloween tradition, and Jack-o'-lanterns are a traditional welcome for trick-or-treaters. The first thing you will need to do is gather your supplies. You will need a pumpkin that pleases you, but is not too small (some people like their pumpkins low and round, while others like them tall and oval shaped), carving knife (a kitchen knife will work), thumb tacks or nails, baking powder, pen or sharpie, spoon, trash can, candle, newspaper and nine and a half times eleven white paper. Picking out a pumpkin can be a bit challenging. You want a pumpkin that is just right for carving. You want to look for a perfectly round, even-colored pumpkin with a thick, stem and a smooth, flat surface. Do not get a pumpkin that is squishy, molded, or one that does not stand up straight. Once you have your pumpkin, you are read to begin the process of carving. Before you begin carving your pumpkin, take newspaper and place on a flat surface and spread the newspaper on the table (this will make the cleaning process easier). Now that you have your pumpkin and the newspaper is placed down you will begin creating the lid. You will first draw a circle on the top of the pumpkin with a sharpie about two inches away from the stem in preparation for making an opening large enough for your hand to reach through. Place the knife into the pumpkin at a slant (this is to ensure that when you place the lid back on the pumpkin it will not fall through) where it will have a ledge to sit steadily on.
