A case study is examined to illustrate possible approaches to care and personal reflections of the author will be shared regarding issues of teenage pregnancy. In 2009 almost 410,000 infants were born to United States teenage girls between the ages of 15 and 19. Nearly two-thirds of births to women younger than 18 and more than half of those among 18 and 19-year-olds were a result of unintended pregnancies (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2011). This represents a teen birth rate as much as nine times greater than other developed countries and is especially high among black and Hispanic teens in southern states (Vital signs: teen pregnancy, 2011). Those at highest risk of teen pregnancy are girls from single parent homes, families with low socioeconomic status, and girls with a sister who became pregnant as a teenager (Talashek, Alba, & Patel, 2006).
The constant exposure of a sexually oriented society has caused many teens to become parents at an early age. The results of this have caused a major breakdown in one of the strongest structural units, which is the family. Families all over the United States are confronted with issues of teen pregnancy and adolescent sexuality. It is unfortunate that the television and music industries provide avenues for the exploitation of sexually contented materials. What society intended as vehicles for entertainment and bringing families together, has proven to be harmful to the minds of adolescents.

Tashalla Young Professor Austin English 1301.BH1 September 26 2012 The Diversity in Teen Parents A former high school teen parent and graduate, Tashanna Forman said, “With all the teen parents in the world today, you would think people around them would realize that there are many different types of young parents and not every teen parents is the same” (Forman). While this scenario might be true in some cases, it is only a stereotype against teen parents.

Why is the age of people having sex getting lower and lower? Children are exposed at young ages to pornographic images and adult situations. Cable television and movies are showing things on a regular basis that twenty years ago were not shown and were considered pornographic. Many parents are allowing the television to raise their children and this is where the children receive their information on sex. The problem is children don't realize the ramifications or dangers of early sexual involvement.
