Landon Stewart Mrs. Luker Government A4 10/23/12 Cons of School Uniforms There are many schools in the U.S. that require their students to wear uniforms, and there are more that don't. I believe that school uniforms should not be required for a few reasons. Uniforms take away from a person's individual identity and freedom to express himself or herself. They can be costly to people depending on a family’s financial status. School uniforms can also be a very uncomfortable fashion that students would not take a liking to.
Fear of the Unknown 2.10 Spencer Aksland Assignment 10.2 Part 2: Persuasive Essay IS17501986 Why are students forced to wear school uniforms? Uniforms are an unneeded tool of conformity used in schools today to rob students of their freedom of self-expression. Students express their creativity through their clothing and appearance. No school has the right to strip us of our individuality. It is important to let students to wear what they please because it shows others that they are different from everybody else and not just another drone in the system.
Payne stated that students should learn the “hidden rules” of the middle class from their educators so that they have another set of rules to use if they choose to do so. Impoverished students, compared to students of middle or upper class, often have a lack of proper funding, thus, a lack of appropriate resources to use in their education. Due to this, they are often unprepared for school, not having the money to purchase books and other educational tools. Both authors realize this, but argue that the responsibility lies on different shoulders. Payne states that impoverished students face inequality at school, insinuating that the school should be responsible for helping to provide for these students so that they can have a better education.
(“Point: The High Cost of School Uniforms”). If all PA public schools require students to wear uniforms, then the schools would be taking away freedom of expression during the week. Students in school who are growing up and transitioning to an adult world need to know how to live their own lives and be themselves, because eventually they won’t have someone there with them, helping them through things in life. Being themselves also means being able to express themselves the way the wish to. School uniforms are not only items that cause a lack of freedom of expression but also a largely ineffective way to help solve the problems they were meant to.
By forcing uniforms on students, schools majorly suppress an important part of being human: Our differences, flaws, and unique sense of beauty/style. These are the things that differentiate us from a glorified ant colony; without expression of our thoughts and unique ideas, we are barely human. Self-expression is an important
Anel Zequera April 11, 2011 Mrs. Nunez English 1301 Uniform Policy Uniform policies can be very brutal and too strict. Many high schools choose to have uniforms so that students can focus more on school academics and not in the way they look or dress. Schools try to do what’s best for the student, not for punishment; without all of these rules, what can I school do to help out their students education and future? School uniforms should be allowed because it helps the students concentrate on the work and not what another student looks like or how they are capable of dressing. School uniforms are to be used to limit skin exposure and anything gang related to prevent anything that might harm students or symbolize anything unsafe.
Also there was countless number of bullying reports because of clothing. The students who could not afford nice clothes were usually picked on and taunted. It started to get so out of hand that parents started pulling their kids out of Augusta and transferring them to another school. So to prevent bullying problems and students from wearing irrelevant clothing the school established a new dress code policy where students were required to wear uniforms. This new policy helped reduce the amount of bullying throughout the school and also made the school look more professional.
According to some parents, their children waste as much as an hour in front of the mirror getting ready for school. Sometimes, it is main reason why their children are late to school. In addition, it can cause conflict between parents and their children. Uniforms, thus, save students time in the morning by eliminating the time they use to choose what they should wear. They help students focus on what is more important than fashion and beauty trends.
Uniforms make it more difficult for gangs to form and make the school a safer place. Schools report that school uniforms decrease fighting and violence that arrise out of arguments over fashionable clothes. Children invariably tease those who do not have trendy clothes. Those who can't afford name brand clothes are often sensitive about their
