Elijah A. Morrill Ethical Theory Essay Two Can there be Morality without God? The philosophies and or arguments for or against Objective Morality can be found in the writings of many great minds in the past. This can be said to be most prevalent in the western world, stemming greatly from the deeply engrained Christian traditions of Western Europe derived via the power of the Catholic Church, and later in the protestant sects. It is also safe to say that this Objective understanding of morality did not lose any of its potency in those who eventually would colonize the New World; in fact it in many ways gave Colonists and Crusaders alike moral permission to conduct acts, such as the Spanish “Reconquista ” and the American western expansions “manifest destiny”. This essay will seek via the writings of men such as Kant and Euthyphro, to either support or Delegitimize this concept of moral objectivity. However, in order to understand the proceeding arguments one must comprehend what Moral Objectivity is. Moral Objectivism is a definition pertaining ones ethical outlook on life. It means that there are set rules for behavior that cannot be changed, for example, “though shall not kill”. Essentially there is a unchanging set of ethical laws which are unbreakable, this means in order for one to live a just life he/she must follow these laws to the letter. It is simple to see how this concept is popular with religious communities for proving gods existence. Essentially arguing, how is it that something used by intelligent beings, and is forever and unbreakable exist without a god or gods? Morality: Do we need a God to be moral? With the above in mind one can plainly understand this concept is complex, and can indeed incite heated conversations, and flair tempers, can objective morality exist separate through the influence of a higher power?
