Daisey Burrell English IV Mrs.Trull 10 July 2013 Cake decorating as a career Cake decorating is not only an art, but can also be a career. In the 1800's, the first cake was a small square that was made from honey, cornmeal and eggs. To add flavor, people began to add nuts and dried fruit fresh from their backyards. Cakes back in the seventeenth century resemble what is a loaf today. As time progressed bakers became very interested in how they could make money and be able to do what they enjoyed. Two well known pastry chef, Duff Goldman and Buddy Valastro achieved their dreams. Both of them proved to the world that cake decorating isn’t just a hobby, but can also be career choice. Duff Goldman first started off in a rock band with a bunch of friends. He didn’t think for a split second that one day he would the owner of a well known bakery in Maryland. Duff has struggled with many aspects of his career like who would he choose to work with him, or how will he start off. Now Duff Goldman products grace store shelves all around the world. He has also been with food network for years now. The total opposite of Duff, Buddy was born into the bakery and pastry business. Buddy as a young kid did many of the dirty jobs at Carlos bakery. To this day he remembers cleaning dishes and watching his dad decorate beautiful cakes, knowing one day he would want to do that himself. Today Buddy owns Carlo’s bakery in New Jersey, and run hundreds of cakes out the door a day. There is an art to decorating a cake, as a baker begin by thinking about what the theme of the cake is going to be, next what flavor and so on. The aspects of decorating a cake are one the type of pan one will use to bake the cake, the icing and design. Buddy and Duff have their client tell them a theme and they construct a design.
