Business Environment Unit 1 Assignment 1 What are a mission / mission statements? The broad vision of an organisation is communicated through its mission statement. It forms the basis of strategic planning, and is the end result from a businesses vision. It spells out a central purpose and shared values. They are: • Define key stakeholders whom need to be satisfied. • In broad terms, describe what strategy to pursue to meet objectives. A mission is a broad statement of intent and underpins the question, “why are we in business”, and may include: • A statement of benefits and values • Customer needs the business will fill • Markets that the business will trade in • Attitudes to growth and finance For example McDonalds UK mission statement is “To be the UK`s best quick service restaurant experience. This will be achieved through five strategies: Development, Our People, Restaurant Excellence, Operating Structure and The Brand.” A mission can be described as a roadmap or strategy map, and is made up of a target or end result. Every business has goals to achieve and targets to reach, and there are many models to describe this. TE Connectivity use the strategy 20x15 which is to be a $20 Billion company by 2015, this is highly promoted throughout the business too all levels. What is a business vision? This is an attempt to establish an ideal future, rather than providing a guide to decision making. This establishes a dream and asks questions like: • What will the business be like in five years? • What will major products and services be? • Who will be employed? • Qualifications and requirements of staff? • Key attitudes and behaviours • Shared values • The culture of the business • Organisation’s image ‘Your vision statement is your inspiration, the framework for all your strategic planning.’ (Ward 2011) The vision
