Britain before the Germanic Conquest The history of the English language begins with the settlement of Britain by Germanic tribes in the middle of 5th C AD. Britain was invaded by Rome as early as 55 and 54B.C. After 71 A.D. the frontier of the expansion reached maintained by the Romans. At the end of the 3rd C the first attacks of Germanic tribes begun on the eastern coast which forced the Roman rulers to build coastal defences from the Wash to the Solent. The Scots began to settle on the north-western coast in the 2nd half of the 4th C. the 1st Scottish settlements in Argyle of the 5th C, began the period of the growing domination of Scots. In 367 Roman Britain attacked Scots from Ireland, Picts from the north and Saxons from the east; it resulted disintegration of the Roaman rule, economic and cultural losses. The Romans soon constructed roads and built towns, cities, also, heating, water supply-high standards of living and developed cultural life. The tracesof Latin is to be found in place names. Latin must have gone out of use as a result of the ongoing changes in the political and military situation on the island. After the departure of the Roman legions intensified until another scale invasions from the European Continent and changed the political geography of Britain again. There very many written records left about the invasions in this particular period by various of authors. Moreover, archeological findings of the period may help to support some of the hypotheses. All in all, after these survey sources of information it can be said that the Germanic invasion of Britain and the settlement was a very slow process. Anglo-Saxon England. Until the 10th C there was no English monarchy. It can be safely assumed that by 700 all of Anglo-Saxon English was Christian, it came to Britain during the Roman rule.
