STYLISTIC DEVICES: * Yolen uses many stylistic devices in this novel. She begins the novel with Gemma telling her three young granddaughters the story of Sleeping Beauty. Each of the odd-chapters in the ‘Home’ section is italicised to alert the readers to the fact that these are flashbacks to the past, that is, Rebecca’s childhood.
In her essay, “Behind the formaldehyde curtain” Jessica Mitford explain what embalming really is and how the steps of embalming are ridiculous and grotesque. She uses an informative and scientific tone to show what happens when a body is left in the hands of a mortician. The author’s use of vivid imagery and complex diction shows that she know what she is talking about and gives the reader an image of what really is going on. Mitford’s purpose is to show the audience that nothing is pretty when the embalming process begins. Mitford begins her essay by using a metaphor; she compares the process of embalming to a drama.
Texts which are considered distinctively visual tend to move, cause reflection and to shock the audience. The play Shoe- horn Sonata and the image of Napalm Girl convey the Horrors of War, Resilience of Women and the Importance of Friendship. These ideas are brought to life by the dramatic techniques employed by John Misto in his play and the Journalist that took the image Nick Ut. The use of dialogue, stage directions, projected images music and imagery techniques all help to engage the ideas and make them indeed distinctive. Distinctively visual texts influences the audiences understanding of people and events within the play Shoe – Horn Sonata which conveys to the audience the horrors of war through the use of dialogue and sound effects
Why does Duffy place ‘The Devils Wife’ in the Centre of the Collection? I’m going to explore the biggest taboo of all, when women murder children., which links in with the Moors Murderers, Ian Brady and Myra Hindley, which is what Duffy’s poem ‘The Devils Wife’ is based on. The poem is told from Hindley’s point of view, this relates to the rest of the collection following the themes of the view and issues regarding women in society and how much men influenced and controlled women. I think that Duffy put ‘The Devils Wife’ in the centre of the collection ‘The Worlds Wife’ because I think it is a turning point in the collection where women become influenced by men. She chose to put this particular poem right in the centre of the collection because it is the most taboo poem and shows just how much men can influence women in relationships or even just for sex.

Literature helps us connect to the understanding of different people with their knowledge of different environments, traditions, cultures, backgrounds, and lifestyles. The support from literature is the image of different communities and cultures.
Figurative Language in The Great Gatsby Figurative language is a very important part of any novel. It helps the reader understand the setting, mood, and personality of the story and characters. Different types of figurative language help the readers understand different aspects of the novel. Imagery helps readers see a picture of any part of the story and metaphors and similes help us recognize the similarities between characters and settings. Figurative language is a part of everyday life and reading and analyzing it in a novel helps the reader throughout their daily lives as well as through a novel.
Throughout the concerning chapters, Brontë allows the reader to explore their own interpretation of Rochester’s former bride, Bertha, through both the eyes of Jane and the description of the environment in which she inhabits. By creating an environment which has such a tense atmosphere, the reader is encouraged to develop their own opinions on whether Bertha Mason is an object of terror, or in fact, and object of pity. The initial and most obvious interpretation that we obtain of bertha is that we must perceive her as a frightening character in which we should fear throughout the novel. The first act of torment in which Bertha was to commit, was when she attempted to kill Rochester by setting fire to his bed in the early hours of the morning. The horror of the chapter begins when Jane hears a “demonic laugh” which she thinks is aimed “at the very keyhole” of her chamber door.
Llorico 1 Josh Llorico Professor Rawley 10.23.13 English 081 A Lesson from “March To Freedom” In “March To Freedom” we see the story of Edith Singer during the holocaust and how difficult situations got for her. Throughout her story she is faced with certain situations that many would never be able to withstand, but she remains strong and hopeful. Edith is faced with various encounters in the camps where the soldiers attempted to humiliate and dehumanize her. Camps, such as Auschwitz, found it their goal to remove their prisoners’ individuality. Despite the various degrading and inhumane actions of the Nazis, Edith showed us that through her times of desperation, she was still brave and willful.
Theme and Narrative Elements in the short story Sandra Rosario June 16, 2014 When one reads a short story the author uses literary elements. These elements helps us as readers to be attracted to a story. Point of view, character and setting are the elements that at least get me interested in reading a story and wanting to know more about the development of the story. The story I chose was “A Worn Path” by Eudora Welty. This story interested me clearly because of the elements mentioned above.
We will look at these short stories and analyze the message and its meaning. Our understanding of the world around us is shaped, molded, and influenced by media, art, music, and written works. We learn of culture, religious, different struggles, commonality, love, and tolerance through such things as literature. Authors use words to bring insight into our hearts and minds; and sometimes these works become a time capsule to remind us of our own struggles. Alice Walker’s The Welcome Table, does just this, through this short story she portrays an elderly lady’s plight.
