A modern example of direct guarding is ‘vigilance’ which is coming home unexpectedly to see what the female partner is up too. Wilson et al found that women who agreed with questionnaire items such as ‘he is jealous and doesn’t want you to talk to other men’ were twice as likely to have experienced serous violence from their partners. Men can also guard against their partners infidelity either by conferring benefits or by inflicting costs, including violence. As not all men possess resources that might be used to provide benefits, some men are especially prone to using violence or the threat of violence (Shackleford et al). According to Daly and Wilson, death of a partner from physical violence may be an unintended outcome if an evolutionary adaptation that was designed for control rather than death.
Curley’s wife is portrayed as being a whore – but this is only due to the way she dresses, her provocative ways and the way she acts around men, as if she is aware of her femininity. This could suggest that she is only like this because she is bored, like it is something to do – something interesting for a change. She is constantly trying to get people to notice her. But, because of Lennie’s purity and innocence, he doesn’t see her in the way other men do – a sexual object. When Steinbeck quotes “And because she had confided in him, she moved closer to Lennie and sat beside him”, it is clear to the audience that Curley’s Wife is using her sexuality as an object to create some sort of excitement for herself.
Males typically have more of a hard time with society when they are homosexual than females. As stated in the video, it is easier for a girl to be homosexual because society would view her as a “tomboy”. Being homosexual attracts attention in every way whether it could be good or bad. Some people will accept the fact and some people will disagree completely. People believe in traditions and learn from what they see from everyday life, so when heterosexuals encounter a homosexual individual it is something different that interferes with their beliefs that they will not
The jealousy is seen by evolutionary psychologists as an adaptive response and it is therefore useful. Similarly, the jealous individual in the relationship could also cause their partner to commit an infidelity. It is noted that men are more likely to experience jealousy because of their fear of cuckoldry. Women, on the other hand, are worried about sharing or losing their investments and resources. Both men and women have evolved retention strategies to deter mates from infidelity.
Aaron Devor explores how these factors, gender behavior and various entertainments, potentially affect everyone in “Becoming member of society: Learning the social meanings of gender.” Not only do Kilbourne’s ads ridicule men by showing the obsession of males, but also the other two authors show how other modern society’s entertainments are meant to ridicule men and most importantly women with their acts of violence and sexuality. The males are the majority species that get hurt through music we hear and programs we watch, whereas advertisements hurt females. The entertainments substantially imply most men are violent, and the advertisements imply women as material objects. In A sense, men and women learning the consequences of violence and sexuality in daily life would help them to find a common ground with another built on respect and compassion because both genders are getting hurt
Since stealing has become a growing problem, stores try to crack down on shoplifters to make punishments as strict as possible so it doesn’t happen again. This affects the community in many ways. Every shoplifter who takes products usually doesn’t realize that the merchant has to pay to replace the items, which are a big setback. Some stores could even close down because of shoplifting, causing the store to go bankrupt. Another reason it affects the community is because stores often raise their prices, which then causes more shoplifting.
When the men in the work place make sexual advances towards Clare or degrade women and each other nothing seems out of the ordinary in fact it seems natural for such masculine based behaviors to be presented. However, when anyone, male or female, shows signs of any female oriented ideal or emotion they are immediately condoned for it and made to feel ashamed. For instance, when Mary begins to cry her boss cracks a joke about women not being able to hold their water. This statement devalues the emotion presented making it appear to be a sign of weakness that only women are capable of and ultimately feeds back into the patriarchy mentality of the dominance of the men over the submissive female. This sense of empowerment given to men in the work force again delivers them the benefit of feeling safe with their ‘authoritative’ actions and behaviors making them feel more at ease within GameaVision.

UNLEASH YOUR HERO By Tiffany Adams This “how-to” article is aimed towards a male audience in middle life. This population may read magazines such as Sports Illustrated or even Playboy. These magazines may objectify women and encourage such theories such as hegemonic masculinity, but they reach a wide male audience that has a huge impact on the issues of Gender Violence and thus deserve to be tapped. This article aims to motivate men to take a stance against Intimate Partner Violence, as activating bystanders even in a more passive role can only have a positive effect on society today. You can hear them arguing, again; but this time, there is an abrupt end to the conflict as one of them escalates
Molloy also uses the character to almost mock men and belittle them by saying ‘men were my performing seals’. This could also be seen as a way to sexualise men, and treat them as if they get rewarded for doing something well- like a performing deal would. She feels that she has a lot of control over them- ‘men were my buttresses’. The fact that she is describing men as ‘buttresses’ and ‘towers’ tells the reader that she almost depends on them- and without them she would fall. The poem shows the weakness of women and how much we depend on men.
