Boy or Girl Toy

Introduction Toys are marketed to young children through television and other forms of media. When you take the time to watch the commercials you will find that some toys are marketed to boys, some are marketed towards girls, and some are marketed to both genders. A good example of this is a racecar set commercial. Typically, you will see two or three small boys playing with a brand new racecar set. There will be no girls. Vice versa, a commercial for a Barbie doll wouldn’t have boys in them. Gender roles are learned at a very small age and they are carried out in our everyday lives. In the exercise we were instructed to as five men and women two questions about gender specific toys. Would you buy your daughter a football if she wanted one for her fifth birthday? Would you buy your son a plastic dish set if he wanted one for his fifth birthday? Body Summary of Men's Responses There seems to be a general consensus amongst my male friends when it comes to their daughters. Every person I asked if they would get their daughter a football for her fifth birthday said yes, very quickly. When I asked them to explain why the answers received again are almost the same. They saw nothing wrong with a little girl that played football, it was a sport and it would keep them active and outdoors. Conversely, when males were asked if they would buy a dish set for their son only one of my friends not only said yes, but he said his son has one. I asked my friend who’s son has a dish set why he got it for him, he said his daughter had a pink dish set and his son always played with it so they bought him an identical set but in blue. However, rest of my friends said absolutely no way they would get their son a dish set because it is a girls toy. Summary of Women's Responses After speaking to five female friends they all came up with about the same answers
