Bowling for Columbine Reaction Paper Bowling for Columbine is a very controversial movie. Michael Moore tends to lean towards the controversial in his documentaries. The movie touched many sensitive subjects, the main one being Guns and everything related to guns. In this paper I will talk about what I thought about Michael Moore’s actions in the movie, the Columbine shooting, and my personal opinions about gun control. Michael Moore handled the documentary very well.
It is also aimed mainly at an American audience as all of the events which are discussed are in America. The purpose of the film was to make a profit, entertain, to encourage people to think more about gun control in America and show people they can make a difference. The genre is documentary and through the 3 documentary modes, expository, observational and interactive, Moore is able to manipulate peoples representations to justify the issues and themes put across in the film. Moore deliberately chooses to use film as his medium because it is widely accessible and uses audio and visual codes to serve his purposes. A variety of tones are used in the film which Moore uses when appropriate such as comic but also uses a more earnest tone when discussing more moving events in the film.
To be in a world of violence, too afraid to leave your own home, living in fear of your neighbour is film producer, ‘Michael Moore’s’ way of hypocritically viewing America, his home country, in a disrespectful and judgemental manner. Michael Moore’s strong insight on America’s gun laws, in documentary ‘Bowling for Columbine’, leaves his audience questioning how and where he gathered the information used within the documentary. The technique which Michael Moore used for creating the title of the documentary leads the audience to believe that the film is based on the Columbine shooting rather than the negative outcome of Gun Laws in America. Moore’s use of the title Bowling for columbine refers back to the date of April 20th 1999 when the famous Columbine high shooting occurred. By using this title for the documentary, shows Michael Moore’s Disrespect and insensitivity to the situation being barely mentioned and taken lightly, tricking the audience into watching the film.
Hazim Evans Research Paper Ms. Bodnio 5/6/10 Recently in todays’ society gun control has become a very relevant topic on how to reform America’s gun laws and ways to control the gun industry. We live in a word today where media ecology influence has shaped our communication pattern in every action and behavior we present. The media shapes the conversation on gun control through many mediums and places a view on gun control which persuades us to agree or disagree leaving us not to not think for ourselves resulting in shaping our conversation on gun control. In this paper we will discuss how the ecology of the media influences our conversation of gun control for the better and for the worse. Also, how the multiple mediums have cost great
Michael Moore is extremely successful in communicating this technique, as he has achieved an excellent portrayal of the problems in American society, being an American citizen and himself growing up around guns. The gun problem is emphasised when Moore points out the shooting of a six year old shooting a six year old in the town of Flint Michigan and this is juxtaposed with the image of the NRA coming to the town to promote guns. The juxtaposition here is quite moving and conveys
The reduction of the crime rates following the reduction of gun-related violence can be used to justify gun control. However, the official statistics does not support this assumption. The reasoning that guns cause crimes arises numerous disputations, as it does not consider that guns are just another mean of committing a crime. Pro-gun advocates usually assert, “Guns do not kill people; people kill people.” The Vice President, Wayne Lapierre argued that the best solution to the Newton Massacre was to allow citizens to own guns. He stated”The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun” (Spitzer,
Moore Money Michael Moore is a prominent filmmaker who mainly bases his work around documentaries. Moore’s most famous piece of work is his influential documentary “Bowling for Columbine” however it contains insidious manipulation and ruthless misdirection of the audience. By Rene Zacchini “Bowling for Columbine” is a documentary based in the exploration of gun violence in American society. Moore uses the 1999 Columbine High School massacre as his hook to draw the viewers in by highlighting the death of young students by guns. However many viewers do not realise that documentaries are only a version of reality.
CONTENT ANALYSIS FORM 1. GENERAL INFORMATION Name: Manjeet Singh Title of your study: Gun Rights vs Gun Control Sociological Research Question: Are you With or Against Guns in America? 2. ABSTRACT (fill this in last) Provide a 200 word maximum summary of your entire project I believe in the right to bear firearms as an American because it is a right guaranteed to us by the second amendment. In this study I looked at different media and sources that state their point of view on the subject, whether they are against guns or with guns.
These gun owners maintain that an unregulated right to bear arms is guaranteed to citizens by the 2nd amendment and this position received support in a Supreme Court decision issued in 2008 which disallowed a Washington D.C. complete ban on handguns. Opponents of gun control argue that gun owners often use their weapons to deter crime and that handguns are most commonly used for this purpose. “Research also shows that many laws do not significantly diminish the number of guns used in violence, although many advocates of gun control assumed they would” (Zimring 48).Some studies have shown that such defensive use of weapons occurs at a much greater rate than the extent to which weapons are used in criminal activity although the validity of these studies is in dispute. Gun control opponents are generally law abiding citizens who put greater trust in individualism than in the government to protect their safety. They are concerned that each step toward greater gun control will lead to the eventual confiscation of all firearms.
