Border Love Story The Story “The Moon Will Forever Be A Distant Love” by Luis Humberto Crosthwaite talks about the love of Florinda and Balboa. Two individuals who fall in love and decide to move to the Northernish Empire because of the resent downsizing and unemployment of Balboa. They decide to board a bus and depart to their uncle’s home in Tijuana ever so in love. Balboa is the secure assertive character and Florinda is the more timid character. When they arrive to the border they come to find out that they cannot cross to the Northernish Empire without papers so Balboa is forced to leave Florinda at his uncle’s house while he travels to the US in his uncle’s trunk to get a job to aid him and Florinda in attaining a better life. Balboa goes from being an account secretary exec to washing dishes at a restaurant as for Florinda she slowly begins to learn how to become independent and the time that they spend away from each other begins to affect their relationship. Florinda begins to work in a Maquiladora plant in Tijuana, this aids in her independence from Balboa in addition she learns to live on her own. Balboa starts wearing jeans and a t-shirt, loses his lisp and takes up with the fair haired waitress Maryanne before being deported by the beastly men. Later Balboa and Florinda split up due to irreconcilable differences. The key event in this story is how characters change. Balboa goes from being the secure accretive conquistador to the laid back no worry male. And Florinda goes from being the timid, narrow-minded and not in contact with reality.
