Book Report: The Prince Niccolò Machiavelli Summary of the book and characteristics of an ideal prince “If a ruler wants to survive, He must learn to stop being good” Niccolò Machiavelli Niccolò Machiavelli's The Prince is arguably the most popular book about politics ever written. Its observations about human behavior are as true today as they were five hundred years ago. In this book, Machiavelli offers advice to politicians regarding how to gain power and how to keep it. Some ideas in the book are stated so harshly and bluntly that the term Machiavellian is now commonly used to describe the process of being cunning and ruthless in the pursuit of power. However, there are some methods can be still utilized by governments. For instance, Machiavelli’s suggestion for leaders to keep public support is still relevant for today's elected officials as they were for leaders of the sixteenth century. The Prince is an extended analysis of how to acquire and maintain political power. It includes 26 chapters and an opening dedication to Lorenzo de Medici. Machiavelli describes his book as a summary of his “understanding of the deeds of great men,” intended to help Lorenzo de Medici achieve reputation as a prince. The book can be divided into four sections: the discussion about different types of principalities or states, the different types of armies and the proper conduct of a prince as military leader, the character and behavior of the prince, and Italy's political situation and solutions for it. The final chapter is a suggestion for the Medici family to supply the prince who will lead Italy out of humiliation. In the first chapter, entitled “Different Kinds of States, and the Different Ways to Get Them,” Machiavelli proceeds to map out a classification of states.
