Page 1 Bombay’s Evolution to Mumbai Introduction Ancient yet modern and sophisticated, economically vibrant yet painfully poor, Mumbai is India in microcosm, a city of extremes and opportunities. Growing up in Mumbai, the financial and cosmopolitan hub of India was fascinating but heart wrenching. The blend of British-influenced Gothic and Victorian styled buildings, roads, schools, and modern-era high-rises and industries was a treat for my inquisitive and naïve eyes. On one side of the city you draw inspiration from the immaculate and pristine colony developed during British rule and when you turn your eyes you come across the largest slum in the Asian Subcontinent with people living in abject poverty; these two separate, yet coexisting worlds, depend on each other for sustenance. And the population continued to grow at a pace that the infrastructure could not sustain. “Bombay’s Evolution to Mumbai” encompasses the process of transition of the city from its inception to saturation through the era of colonialism, post-independence and globalization. This essay outlines the factors that have contributed to Bombay’s growth (name changed in 1995 to reject the unwanted legacy of British rule and to make it synonymous with the local languages)1 during Colonial British rule, transforming the city economically, aesthetically, and politically. It also draws a comparison between early Roman Civilization and Colonial British Rule identifying aspects that are instrumental in understanding its origins after the merging of the islands. Additionally, it states the influence of British Raj on shaping the educational, political and social form of the city and its ramifications which are apparent even today.
