Social Marketing Assignment Blood Donation Reflective Writing Maurice Murphy Dima Keane Introduction Blood donation as an activity has been going on in Ireland since 1950 ( ), with over 1000 people receiving blood donations each week(). With this in mind, it seems peculiar that blood donation is a subject that has not crossed my mind in a number of years. I have only had the subject brought to the forefront of my mind by the Social Marketing module in fourth year Marketing in C.I.T. Over the course of the module, a number of reasons have been put forth as reasons that eligible members of general public do not regularly donate blood or platelets, namely: 1. Fear of Needles/Blood. Neither of these fears apply to me, due to playing sports( including soccer, judo and Mixed Martial Arts) for the past decade and seeing blood from injuries on a weekly basis. 2. Inconvenience. Many mobile clinics are on at inconvenient times for 9-5 workers or students, as they close before these potential donors are near the centres. 3. The person has donated before and no longer feels the need to donate again. 4. Unaware of the need for blood/platelets 5. Belief that the process is time-consuming 6. Lack of feeling of personal obligation 7. Lack of Information on mobile clinics. I have found in my experience that the number of signs advertising mobile clinics are few and far betwewn in my local area of Carrigaline/Douglas, and the few signs that are erected are erected very close to the day that the mobile clinic will be in the area, giving little time to see the sign and become involved in blood donation. Some of these reasons did apply to me as a potential donor, namely the inconvenience factors and lack of information, as I previously thought that a donor had to fast for 12 hours before the donation could take place.
