Speech Title: Blood Donations Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience to donate blood. Thesis: Individuals should donate blood because blood is needed every two seconds, blood is perishable, and there is no substitute for blood. Introduction: Imagine a ten year old girl loosing pints of blood due to trauma, to the point where her body no longer can function. This little girl lies unconscious, doctors and family hoping she will survive. The only thing that can save her is a blood transfusion, which would be needed from a donor. Now imagine if there were no such things as blood donations and this young life would be lost because of loss of blood. Some people are afraid of needles, some faint at the sight of blood, others just do not care. However, for the people who do we care, they are rewarded with the gift of saving someone’s life. That someone could be that little girl who was struggling to survive. By donating blood once you can save up to 3 lives (United blood service: Hero rewards, 2008-2010). Or imagine your little nephew or niece baby was born with a heart defect and required daily transfusions of blood in order to have a chance to survive. Body: I. Although there is a shortage of blood, Red Cross does not allow homosexual individuals to participate in blood donations. A. Homosexuals are not allowed to donate blood due to increased risk of HIV contraction. 1. Disease in infected blood can go undetected within 8 days. (Gay Blood Donation, 2008 2.
