Bless Me Ultima Antonio learns several valuable lessons throughout the story of “Bless Me Ultima”. Lessons such as where the truth lies, what one should rely on for the truth, and most importantly, he matures beyond his years. Once his trek is complete, Antonio learns that the truth does not lie in religion, myth, cultural influence, or folklore but rather inside of his own heart. Antonio’s exodus towards maturity is quite difficult for him and one of the most pressing issues in his search for ‘the answer’ is his kin. Throughout the book, his family is constantly arguing over his destiny, instead of aiding him on his choices. This is most present in his uncles, whom always argue over whether he is destined to become a priest or a Vaquero (one who rides the Llano). The conflict in Antonio’s family is already evident by his first dream. In this dream, he is seeing his birth and the rising argument over his destiny. “It is blasphemy to scatter a man’s blood on unholy ground, the farmers chanted. The new son must fulfill his mother’s dream… He is a Marez… He is his father’s blood! (6)” Even before Ultima arrives to take Antonio on his journey; Antonio is subconsciously at battle over which path he should take and which one holds the truth. Right after this dream, Anaya gives us a short scene where Antonio approaches his mother and asks if Ultima was present at his birth. When the topic of his father and Marez acquaintances are brought up, his mother attacks the thought of them viciously, “Vaqueros, they call themselves, they are worthless drunks!... You will be a Luna, Antonio.” There’re several situations like this in the book in which the Luna side of Antonio’s family attempts to pressure into their side of the family and vice versa. When Ultima first arrives it seems she has a Luna influence on Antonio. In fact, through most of the book, Antonio
