From the start of his life things are wrong; Augesten is born into a forced marriage. His parents argue constantly and his brother is unloving toward him. He is frequently relocated away with his mother to live with her parents or to live with friends in Mexico. Parents of the 1700's had different parenting values then the parents of today. Lord Chesterfield's letter to his traveling son, whom is traveling all around England, is a prime example of this. At first, Chesterfield seems full of doubt, wondering if his letter will even be of any help to his son. However, later on, the letter shifts into a seemingly threatning tone, telling his son that he needs to treat life like a competition and be better then everybody. With the use of understatement and irony, the letter states his values as a loving, yet strict father who only wants his son to succeed and nothing more.
Similarly, Mr. Solchuck demonstrates his stubbornness regarding the Earth once he abruptly assaults his son in order to enforce medieval church ideologies of the Earth upon him. “When I die, there will be nobody to look after the land. Instead he has gone off to tamper with god’s earth”. Solchuck is being ironically stubborn since he is tampering by digging up the earth while Nick, on the other hand, is only studying it. Another similarity between Nick and his father is that both their views of Earth are developed by their teachers.
The broken chain In his novel Things fall apart, Chinua Achebe depicts how British colonisers destroy the traditional Ibo life. One of the pillars of the tribe is the chain of fathers and sons together in life and after death. This is best described towards the end of the story when the protagonist Okonkwo has driven away his son, Nwoye, to the Christian church. Okonkwo is in a state of confusion and fury, afraid that his other five sons will follow Nwoye: "He saw himself and his fathers crowding round the ancestral shrine waiting in vane for worship and sacrifice and finding nothing but ashes of bygone days, and his children the while praying to the white man's god. "(142) This sentence is the core of the narrative.
Instead, the dreams incorporate other thoughts and images that are unrelated to, but are symbolic of the main idea of the dreams. In one particular nightmare, Antonio finds himself stuck between three worlds: that of his mother's hopes, his father's dreams, and the mysterious golden carp. In Antonio's nightmare, his mind uses its own symbolism to portray images and thoughts that relate to the conflict in his life about religion, to his many fears, and to his trust and admiration of a character called Ultima. In Antonio's nightmare, many themes are present that relate to a conflict in religion. In his nightmare, Antonio's parents are arguing over what Antonio's religion and way of life should be like.
Mr.O'Halloran tells Frank “You have to study and learn so that you can make up your own mind” (208) this opens a door of possibility to Frank because he's always being told what to do and never thought of what he can do or think. Malachy, Frank's father who is an alcoholic, influence's Frank in many ways. At one point in the book, Frank's father drinks the money for the new baby, when Frank find's him he exclaims “ I don't know what to do because I know I'm raging inside...all I can think of doing is running in and giving him a good kick in the leg...I might as well go home and tell my mother a lie that I never saw him couldn't find him” (185). By doing this Frank appears more mature than he is, this also shows how much Frank loves his father but cannot get mad at his father despite all the bad choices he has made. Despite Frank's old teachers that bully him and his alcoholic father, Frank doesn’t think of hate or bully other people because of it.
Nnaemeka marries out of tradition, where the father chooses who he wants his son to marry. His son chose himself and that is a great disrespect to his people. It causes pain and disappointment to the father. The father is in pain because he couldn’t believe his son went out of tradition and decided to marry someone of his choice. “..Father’s silence was infinitely more menacing than a flood of threatening speech.
Antonio knows both sides of his family; he learns that his parents are like polar opposites and by siding with one, he will be distanced from the other. Having to choose will end up causing trouble for Tony and he knows that he is not yet ready to choose. Tony is ambivalent about his decision to choose what he will be when he grows up when his parents talk about him, “Antonio is a mere child, almost 7 years old, and he must choose how he will live his life later on. Antonio's fraternal line is filled with vaqueros who traveled the llano and did not like to settle down,” (41). Antonio's mother is hopeful that one day he will become a priest, however, his Marez heritage, akin to the sea, from his father’s side is unstable and roving.
He is not hiding why doesn’t want to visit his family. When Fanton was a young boy his brothers hunted him and taunted him, as said in the story “He was startled by the sound of Peter roaming his name. The summons might have meant anything from “Mom wants you for dinner” to “prepare for a beating”” or “Over the years they have bloodied his nose, pulled down his pants and squeezed the sides of his lips while forcing him to repeat “I’m a pretty baby” over and over again”. Therefor when Fanton lost his favorite model car he was quick to blame his brothers, accusing them for taking it and hiding it his reaction is described like this in the story:”Fintan went to the kitchen and threw the only tantrum of his life. While his mother and brothers looked on, he shrieked, stamped, broke a dish and went stiff as a corpse”.
