Speech Preparation Outline Title: Biscayne Aquifer Thesis: The ability to have an Aquifer is essential to our well-being because it contains minerals and vitamins that are required by the body and it continues to be the most important natural resource for water. Purpose: Have the class understand how our water source (An Aquifer) is vital to our everyday living. Source: Department of Environmental Resources Management (DERM), Miamidade.gov, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) I. Introduction Hand out bottles of water to the class. Do you have any idea where your drinking water comes from? Or when you turn on the faucet, where your water comes from? Ever wondered what an Aquifer is, looks like and even how it works? II. What is an Aquifer? I did not know what an Aquifer was prior to this project. I even ask Professor Litchman if he can give me another topic because I found this topic to be dull. Now, I am glad I have the knowledge to inform you of what is it. An Aquifer is a body of permeable rocks (Lime rocks) that allows groundwater to move easily. These rocks are highly fractured and they make the best Aquifers because the cracks and pores of the rocks are filled with water that seeps below the surface of the land. (For example, Geologist has compared an Aquifer to a hard sponge or a coffee filter. Why? Because the water has to travel from point A to point B and the water movement has to force itself through the cracks and holes to create that tremendous pressure and friction). Wells and pipes from the water department division pump the water out of the aquifer to our homes and businesses. The Biscayne Aquifer is located in the Southeastern portion of Florida.
