Biology Report on Global Food Shortage and Farming 1) Intensive farming is a type of farming that requires a lot of input into the production to produce a higher amount of food for the growing population. This type of farming uses lots more mechanical machinery and has many processes to it. It is also the reason (mostly in developing countries) that there has been a reduction in the farming population. High-tech machinery: High-tech machinery plays a major role in intensive farming, mostly because intensive farming requires fast and accurate food production which machines provide. The use of machines allows easy distribution of fertilizers and pesticides among crops and quick harvests, all doing it in a shorter time period. Machines also require fewer workers to work on a farm and only the owner has to only pay for oil which is cheaper than having to pay workers and train them. If machines are not used in intensive farming, then the employment of many workers for cheap labor is used. Chemical fertilizers: Chemical fertilizers are fertilizers that have been added with different types of chemicals (mainly nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium being the 3 major plant nutrients) to increase and promote growth in a specific part of a plant. This type of fertilizer almost never supports a plants every needs and are usually targeted at parts of the plants that are most used or consumed. Chemical fertilizers can be immediately changed to fit a plants specific demands so would increase production of crops. Fertilizers also decrease the amount of times that a crop takes to grow so in a smaller piece of land, a farm can grow the same amount of food that farms double its size may be able to grow. Pesticides: Pesticides are chemicals spray on plants to either repel or kill pests such as bugs and rodents. The use of pesticides allow the production and growth of crops to
