According to page three of Biopsychology by J.P.J. Pinel, biological psychology “is the scientific study of the biology of behavior.” Essentially biological psychology; also known as behavioral neuroscience, looks at the biological reasons for psychological differences. For example, fetal alcohol syndrome which is a biological effect of drinking while pregnant can and often does influence the psychological development of the fetus. This in turn results in slowed learning and poor behavioral patterns, which is no fault of the child. 2) What is the historical development of biological psychology? Biopsychology was historically developed in the 20th century; though no one is certain of the exact date, according to Pinel. In light of this fact an approximate date of 1949 is given. The date of 1949 is provided as the date of development of biopsychology because that is when The Organization of Behavior by Donald O. Hebb was published. Donald Hebb’s book played a key role in the emergence of biopsychology. 3) Name one to three important theorists associated with biological psychology. Among the many theorists associated with biological psychology listed in Biopsychology by Pinel are three theorists of note. Those theorists are Charles Darwin, René Descartes, and Donald O. Hebb. Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution plays a vital role in illustrating the interlacing aspects between biology and psychology. René Descartes’ dualism theory enabled the advancement of medical science that had been hindered by the Church up until that point.
