Biological Psychology Name PSY 340: Biological Foundations of Psychology Date Biological Psychology The beginning of behavior, emotion, and thought all begin in the brain and this is the foundation of biological psychology. Biological psychology is the scientific study of the physiological bases of human behavior and mental processes. Biological psychology is also known as behavioral neuroscience and physiological psychology. Biological psychology focuses on the relationship of underlying physiological events and psychological processes. This form of psychology is involved with the mind-body dispute and researchers how they affect one another.
Lewin talks about a number of conditions that humans commonly suffer from. He believes that human beings and their illnesses are the products of a long evolutionary history. Because of this, Lewin considers modern medicine as deterrence to human evolution and scientists and doctors should combine the idea of evolution and medicine to create revolutionary treatments he calls “Darwinian medicine”. It is difficult to determine whether the concept of Darwinian medicine holds any weight in the medical world. Lewin’s theory suggests infection, trauma, and genetic diseases should be left untreated in order to help the human body fight and respond naturally; doctors should only intervene if necessary.
The biological explanations for depression centre on the mood disorder being biologically caused. Genetic factors suggest that you are born with a biological weakness which makes you unable to resist stressors, which consequently leads to depression. This is known as the diathesis stress model. The main piece of research that supports this comes from the Maudsley Hospital twin register, where concordance rates of 46% were found in MZ twins and 20% in DZ twins. This suggest that depression must be passed on through genes if there is a high concordance rate between twins which share the same genetic makeup both having depression.
It was referred to as phrenology, and is primarily concerned with the localization of brain function. Franz Josef Gall was a phrenologist who could prove his theory of contra lateral function which believed that the right side of the brain controlled the left side of the body and vice versa. New innovative advancements during the 19th century allowed for new clinical studies to be performed that allowed scientists and psychologists to study individuals with mental illnesses and brain damage. If we wouldn’t had the advancements in the 19th century scientists and psychologists would have continued to struggle to prove theories on the basis of ideas rather than scientific evidence. Conclusion The history of todays psychology has been influenced by many important people throughout time.
Nature Vs. Nurture Daniel Franks Western Governors University Issues in Behavioral Science GTL 1 October 27, 2014 Nature Vs. Nurture The term, nature vs. nurture, was coined by Sir Francis Galton after two published studies, Hereditary Genius (1869), and English Men of Science: Their Nature and Nurture (1874) explored whether certain traits were inherited from birth or if they could be learned and fostered by environment and upbringing. Since then this debate has been put to everything from intelligence to sexual orientation, with a few scholars taking a firm stance on one side of the argument or another, but most believing that both take an equally important role in determining a persons personality. In this paper we will briefly breakdown both sides of the debate,
The RFID is applicable to a small clinic as well as a large scale hospital. The tracking of the medical records through the RFID system is a revolution led by the Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center. This is a unit with the U.S. Army Medical Research and Material Command. The Army wanted to improve their effectiveness in health-care delivery. So they researched the 3M Company and found that they had a solution to the problem that the military was having with keeping track of medical records.

The following essay will provide discussion on topic "What role does Freud have in modern psychology?” Although Freud’s theories have been widely criticized during his life and afterward, this essay will argue that his work is still playing important role in modern Psychology. Starting point for the discussion is to examine the definitions of relevant terms. Psychology, Themes and Variations defines psychology as the science that studies behavior and psychological and cognitive process that underline it, and it is the profession that applies the accumulated knowledge of this science to practical problems (Weiten, W. 2004, p 18). Freud was born in 1856, the year Darwin published The Origin of the Species. He grew up in one of the most exciting times in human history, when the basis of modern science was being laid down by early psychophysicalists like Billroth, Helmholtz and Brucke (Sulloway, 1979).
In this assessment, I will analyze the imperative influence of the Christian religion on the evolution of medicine from our previous studies of prehistoric medicine progressing to our current study of the Middle Ages, in the aftermath of the Roman Empire. The general perspective is that we must investigate the following factors and their effect: cause of illness/disease, treatment/care of the sick, anatomy, and the education/training of doctors. Originally, examining surgery was a category, but was eliminated due to insufficient amount of evidence. First of all, we must investigate how the important weight of religion assisted logical science and biology in the evolution of medicine and supernatural healing. I believe that the most significant category in this subject is the education and training of doctors which proves that religion assisted medicine.
As the text states, it started with a concern for, “…explaining the processes of thought by using the technique of introspection (i.e., self-reflection)” (Wickens, 2005). Since self-reflection is biased then there had to be a more investigational method, conceivably, a method where the information could be observed and recorded. Psychology has become more about the study of behavior and mental phenomena, whereas, biopsychology is about the study of the brain and how it relates to behaviors. In my paper I will identify some of the important theorists that are associated with biological psychology and describe the relationship between biological psychology and other fields of psychology and neuroscience. I will also describe the major underlying assumptions of a biopsychological approach.
