Biofiltration – a Primer by Stephen F. Adler Report by Vivek Vattipalli (CH06B062) Motivation of the Article Biofiltration is an emerging technology for the control of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). The use of this process in areas like wastewater treatment and composting facilities has been increasing rapidly in the past few years due to advantages like lower capital and operating costs and high removal efficiencies. With numerous research studies being conducted in this area, it has only recently started being considered as a suitable option for air emission control. The author, in this article, has tried to set guidelines which could be used to scale up and design biofiltration processes for the control of organics. He also tries to address issues related to maintenance and operability of this process as compared to other existing technologies. Ease/difficulty in the article 1. Technical Concepts The technical concepts required to understand this article are relatively simple. Biofiltration basically relies on sorption and biodegradation. Knowledge of other basic concepts like humification and flow through packed beds are also helpful in the understanding of the article. Though these have not been elaborated on explicitly, their application and requirement is quite apparent from the way the article is written. He has also used diagrams and graphs to make the article more comprehensible. 2. English Writing The author has used simple language and short sentences.
