Film analysis of Billy Elliot Sandra Mc Glynn In this film analysis, I will write about the film Billy Elliot, made in year 2000, directed by Stephen Daldry and written by Lee Hall,. Billy Elliot is about an 11 year old boy named Billy. Billy grows up in a mining community in northern England during the coalminers strike. He is the son of a coalminer, and lives with his older brother, grandmother and father. Billy takes boxing lessons, mostly to please his father who has a big passion for the sport. Therefore, when Billy starts ballet dancing Billy becomes torn between his unapproved love of dance and the discrimination from his family. However, his love for ballet is so big nothing can stop him and therefore he decides to continue and slowly, but surely his family accepts Billy for who he is. The setting takes place in a mining village in northern England in 1984. At this time, there is a big coalminers strike going on and Billy’s family is a part of this. Billy lives in a typical working class neighbourhood and due to the strike the conditions are rough for the Elliot family. The strike affects the film a lot because it is one of the main reasons why Billy’s family is struggling. They’re also struggling with the great loss of the mother. Billy therefore tries to keep the ballet lessons a secret from his father and his brother, because of their living difficulties, as well as Billy’s fear of their reaction. The setting is extremely important to the film, because in those days, people thought differently and they weren’t as open minded as they are today. I say this because dancing wasn’t seen as very manly and masculine. There is also the question of the political setting.
