Comparative essay about: “Bend it like Beckam” and “Billy Elliot” Introduction We live in a society in which the choices we make are sometimes driven by different values and where it’s very difficult for us to follow ours dreams and do what we really like, because we are afraid of what people or others might think or say. In the movies Bend it like Beckham (2002) directed by Gurinder Chadha and Billy Elliot (2000) directed by Stephen Daldry, the different types of conflicts such as person against person and person against society, settings and also the characters play an important part in showing us what role men and women should play in our society based on gender appropriate behavior and sexual orientation. Body Paragraph 1 Gender stereotypes are very present in both movies showing us what the proper roles of men and women are. The characters are also facing different obstacles and internal conflicts in doing what they really like. Billy’s dad for example is convinced in the beginning that men should do boxing instead of ballet and this forces Billy to take ballet classes in secret even if his father is against that. In Bend it like Beckham Jesse is also playing soccer without her parents’ consent by telling them that she is going to work. We also find strong cultural values in both movies which justifies the types of conflict find in them for example in the case of Jesse who wants to practice a sport that in her culture is forbidden for women because in Indian culture women should be at home cooking like her mother and her sister Pinky and not playing with men, and Jesse’s friend Jules also faces the same conflict as her mother wants her to act like a “decent girl” wearing appropriate bras instead of tracksuits bottoms in order to attract men and get a boyfriend.
