Homicide paper and Bernhardt “Bernie” Tiede The case of Bernhardt “Bernie” Tiede is very well known for its excellent and humorous film adaptation and also for Bernie’s unusual character and peaceful life, which clashes with a murder and life sentence. Bernie Tiede was a loved former mortician and funeral director in Carthage, Texas, which is located in the state of East Texas. Bernie lives his everyday life, when suddenly, thanks to his jobs, Mrs. Marjorie “Marge” Nugent, a wealthy 81 years-old Carthage widow, formed an attachment to Bernie and opened him door to new lifestyle. It was not a relationship, rather a symbiotic friendship. Other citizens of Carthage hated old Mrs. Nugent, due to her bad temper and Bernie was a very sympathetic man with an inexhaustible patience. One day, however, despite Bernie’s calm and level-headed behaviour even his cup of patience overflew, he lost his self-control and shot Mrs. Nugent in the back four times with a rifle, which he happened to be carrying that moment. After he realized what he did, he placed Mrs. Nugent’s body in a freezer that was used for storing food at her Carthage home and then he sealed the freezer with a duct tape. Next nine months her body was conserved in the freezer, Bernie pretended that nothing happened and began to donate Mrs. Nugent money to a charity, school and other people in need. After these nine months Mrs. Nugent son Dr. Rod Nugent found her body in the Carthage house. Bernie Tiede was convicted of the murder and sentenced to life in prison. To deepen into Bernie’s case and its law contradiction it is important to understand the basic information concerning Homicide, Murder and Manslaughter in different countries. First we will look at United Kingdom legal system that as I assume will resemble to the one in Texas, which will be the next step. And last of all will be Czech republic
