Epic Hero vs. Universal Hero The Anglo-Saxons characterize Beowulf as an epic hero and these views relate to how modern day society portrays a universal hero. An epic hero is a main character in an epic whose actions are legendary; according to the Anglo-Saxons Beowulf is an epic hero. The qualities of an epic hero range from having the willingness to die to performing great feats. TEXTUAL SUPPORT ( evenly matched with Grendal, Grendal’s mother, dragon and willingness to die before each fight). EXPLANATION. These are only some examples of on how the Anglo-Saxons characterize Beowulf as an epic hero. What makes an epic hero is very similar to what makes a universal hero in modern day society. In today’s world a universal hero can mean anything from a superhero to a citizen who is hero like. Many superheroes have one tough opponent that is harder to defeat than others and some have supernatural powers. Batman may not have any supernatural powers but he is well equipped with weapons that help him defeat his foes. The Joker, Batman’s main nemesis, is also equally equipped. When they go into combat it is evenly matched (COMIC NUMBER). Superman was also well matched with his archenemy, Lex Luthor, and Superman had supernatural powers like flying and incredible strength (COMIC NUMBER). Batman and Superman are modern day universal heroes. Many citizens who are hero like perform great feats that help all of humankind. Firefighters and doctors are all different types of heroes. Firefighters risk their own life to save others. Doctors learn and absorb the knowledge they need to know to help save lives.
