The Green Lantern, a man with a power based entirely off of imagination. The Flash, a man so fast he can run through solid objects by rearranging his particles, making him unstoppable. The most popular was Batman, a wealthy man who decides to put a stop to crime and is prepared for everything. Marvel’s characters were humans with powers, whereas DC had heroes who were almost unstoppable. Stan Lee created his characters to be the greatest superheroes but still be human.
With each character having their own heroic qualities they can also be very similar. Batman unlike most superheroes does not hold any superpowers. His physical strength, wealth and martial arts skills help him fight his war on crime. Spiderman, on the other hand, has super strength with the ability to cling to most surfaces, shoot spider-webs and react to danger quickly. Superman uses his superhuman strength, speed stamina, freezing breath, super hearing and vision powers to fight off his enemies and to save his fellow citizens.
This makes Batman more realistic because Superman has supernatural powers that are un-relatable to humans. However, Batman’s human like character is not the only thing that sets him apart from Superman. Since Batman is a human he has no supernatural powers. Unlike Superman, Batman cannot fly, he doesn’t have super strength, but he still has the exact same character role that Superman does which is fighting the villains and the saving the cities from crime. He is able to do this because he physically trains
In the fifth century, around the time “Beowulf” could have taken place the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes pushed themselves into what is now Denmark bringing their epic stories. An epic, or long heroic poem, is the story of a great legendary warrior renowned for his values, courage, strength, and enemies. Since few people could write at this time they used oral tradition to pass down stories and, the Anglo-Saxons had scops or poet-singers to recites them for entertainment. Anglo-Saxons believed that if they had good values, courage, and strength then you would gain immortality for everyone would remember the hero’s achievements. There are many epic stories, but one that is considered to be England’s national epic is “Beowulf” for it was the first of its kind to be written in the English language.
So which of these super figures best typifies the heroic ideal? The abilities of each of these characters are quite different. While Batman is a mere human with amazing gadgets, Superman is endowed with super strength, near invincibility, laser and x-ray vision, and the gift of flight, all of which he employs in the protection of Metropolis and Earth. Batman is, however, no less capable of protecting the citizens of Gotham City. Batman has an amazing array of equipment to help him.
He was a normal man who faces problems and conquers them, while becoming an awesome hero. This makes Batman human and because he is so unlike Superman, an alien from krypton who has laser eyes and super strength far beyond the reach of the average person. Batman is the average guy. However, Batman's normalness is not the only thing that makes him a better example of a hero and his origins play another part in this. Batman, being a normal human being, obviously has no superhuman powers.
There are several signifiers in the film that reinforce these ideals. There are several long shots of Superman running or flying and the way they’ve lit these shots show the muscle definition. This also evident on the poster for this movie, where the muscles on his arms are particularly well defined. Another example of is when Clark Kent opens up his shirt to reveal that he is Superman when he’s running to change and go and save the crashing plane. Another example of a muscular superhero is Thor who features in Thor (2011) and The Avengers (2012).
Yes, Superman, Spiderman and the Batman of old were strong, manly and violent. But they were also vulnerable and altruistic.
Every society/culture since the creation of man has created this type of hero to embody the values and mores of that time period. To be thought of as an epic hero the character must be endowed with specific traits. A few of these traits are: having great stature, always larger than life, have traits most valued by that society (i.e. tremendous courage, humility, super human strength.) a quick wit accompanied by extraordinary intelligence and a perspicacity for the journeys he must endure and the adversaries that he will have to thwart.
One way they do it is to make comic book heroes exciting so that they seem real. One more difference is that comic book heroes have abnormal powers, but mythological creatures don’t have abnormal powers, but in on way they look abnormal. One example is, Argos the hundred-eyed monster. They both can be considered heroes in a way. Besides the differences between both of them, they also have thing that are alike in.
