What is an epic hero? An epic hero sacrifices life and limb to safeguard what matters to
them most. Also, an epic hero is a strong and responsible leader that others may look up to.
Someone that is always there to serve, protect, and advise for the greater well-being of everyone.
Beowulf is an epic hero that risks it all for the people that he serves and that look up to him.
In the epic poem “Beowulf,” Beowulf is summonsed by a king, whose name is Hrothgar,
to aid in a problem. The problem being a monster named Grendel. Beowulf arrives to Herot with
his men from the land of the Geats. Later in the epic, Beowulf encounters two more difficulties,
Grendel’s mother and a dragon which terrorizes Hrothgar’s kingdom. Beowulf shows many
characteristics of an epic hero. He is courageous, puts others before himself, is a strong and
responsible leader, and does these brave deeds out of the Greatness of his heart, not for any sort
Beowulf is all but ordinary, he has the strength of many men and it is revealed during the
battle with Grendel. Beowulf battles, he battled in such a way that he is very well respected. In
the epic, Beowulf fights the monster Grendel by wrestling and attacking him in the nude, his
only weapon is his bare hands. In this way he earns glory and honor to his name. He crushes the
monsters claws even though the beast is much larger than him. Beowulf also reveals his
superhuman strength when he slays Grendel’s mother who seeks to avenge her son’s death my
defeating Beowulf and terrorizing Hrothgar’s kingdom. Beowulf is knocked to the ground whilst
attempting to slay Grendel’s mother too. He is deemed ineffective until he discovers a magical
sword which he then uses with all of his strength to slice
through her neck severing her head from what once was Grendel’s mother. On his final battle
Beowulf faces an angry dragon in which a piece of its treasure is stolen by a thief. Beowulf
